Quarter ounce of shrooms and that picture, and your brain would melt and run out your ears.

How Rolling Stone magazine picked that guy as having the greatest song of all time is beyond me.

His singing is like an animated drunk harmonica

Speeddog

Yeah, his singing isn't much to write home about.

Lyrics, different story.

Buckets of rain
Buckets of tears
Got all them buckets coming out of my ears
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand
You got all the love honey baby
I can stand.

I been meek
And hard like and oak
I seen pretty people disappear like smoke
Friends will arrive friends will disappear
If you want me honey baby
I'll be here.

I like your smile
And your fingertips
I like the way that you move your lips
I like the cool way you look at me
Everything about you is bringing me
Misery.

Little red wagon
Little red bike
I ain't no monkey but I know what I like
I like the way you love me strong and slow
I'm taking you with me honey baby
When I go.

Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must
You do what you must do and ya do it well
I'll do it for you honey baby
Can't you tell?

If he had been a really good singer, he would have made the Beatles look like the Bay City Rollers.

Bah...the best of his body of work was done before he wrecked his Triumph motorbike...

that is not to say he did not write some phenomenal songs afterwards

but a mountain of crep came with it...something got lost in that crash

or gained...

he gained his sense of mortality

and

prioritized his life

so the question is

would his work be seen as so legendary had he not dropped off the face of the earth for a decade after that crash?

RAT900

I think his earlier work would have always been regarded legendary based on its own merit....irrespective of whether he continued to write immediately after the crash or had he died in it

but you do raise an interesting point about confronting mortality and the life-perspective shift that can often attend that sort of event...the well of creativity is a funny thing...it can be both prolific and fragile at the same time...

he was floundering around...I recall him converting to Christianity at some point in the late 1970's which would indicate he was looking for something....

either something he had not previously needed or a way back to something that had gotten lost
