OK explain this to me.
I win the D16, pay the taxes, donate it, file a tax deduction, get cash back, and buy an MTS 1200? who's the accountant handling this for me?
You wouldn't pay the taxes on it as you immediately donate it to a group and at the end of the year, you claim this as a contribution on your taxes and acts as a positive cash flow. So if you owe money, it will come out of there first or if you are clean and owe nothing (proud on you for having your affairs set up ideally) then you get a nice check in the maily after April 15 or whenever you file.

I would load it up with a few kilos of coke and sell it. I would then call the cops.

Let me "buy" it. I would LOVE to run from the fuz on that mean machine. Not too much coke though, don't want to slow me down. [moto]

If you have a couple of kilos of coke you could trade someone for a Desmo !...but that wouldn't be a smart move on either party's part.

but then again, is it worth shelling out 18k for a bike that has such limited use other than saying own one?
it surely is
to me at least.
To me it is far from a bike that has limited use. I'd be one of few, if any, to put 5000 miles a year on it.
I'd ride it to DIMBY. At the track. In the rain. To get ice cream. And for any other reason. It would also get put on my annual bike washing routine.
Area of application is in the eye of the beholder.
I guarantee someone would be beholding me on that thing with luggage.
And and my garmin

I reckon that I would choose to ride the crap out of it as well, albeit rather nervously at first. And I would surely park it in my living room, so that I could see it and stare at it everyday. However, the thought has crossed my mind that I might sell it. Financially, if I kept it I could only have one bike. And a POS car. But if I turned around and sold it, I could have a stable. Buy a SC1000, SS1000, and another monster. You know, a little variety. Don't know what I'd do, guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
I wonder how much the D16RR would cost to insure. And how much do you reckon it would cost to adjust 16 valves? I did my own valves on my M900, and that was enough!

D16 used to come with a service plan included in the purchase price--dunno if that's still true?
BTW, I had this great idea where everybody on the board could give me $40 (but no more than $100--I don't want to be greedy) and I could buy my own D16.

Wonder what the value would be over time if it remained in its current condition.
Say 10 years, so 2020
Value same, lower, higher and at what price point. A collectable for sure.

Lower I'd say for some time, until maybe collectible status.
The performance attraction will fade as newer bikes get more impressive, for a fraction of the cost.
