Flying up to Portland for a couple days and looking for suggestions on places to eat and things to do and see.  Staying downtown on the river if that helps.  Thanks for any tips!

If you like books, you have to go to http://www.powells.com/

When are you going to be in Portland?

You can head out our way and see Timberline Lodge and Mt Hood. There's the brew pub in Govy that makes their own beer too. They have overpriced but decent food.

Portland Saturday market, the Japanese Garden, the zoo, the rose garden, it really depends on what you want to do.

The service at McMenamin's places is typically awful but I like their food.

For drinks:

The Departure Lounge:
http://www.departureportland.com/

..kind of an upscale for just drinks, but the view from the outside terrace is awesome. All of downtown is visible.

Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery
http://www.rockbottom.com/

...more my style, good beer & grub, pool tables upstairs

For breakfast:

Sanborn's
http://www.sanbornsbreakfast.com/

Awesome German pancakes, good hangover cure

Hiking/Siteseeing:

Multnomah falls
http://www.multnomahfalls.org/

~30 east of downtown,  nice view of the Columbia Gorge on the way there. Scenic trails lead up to the top of the falls

The Grotto (The National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother)
http://www.thegrotto.org/

Not just a church. A 62 acre catholic shrine, with trails that lead up an enormous cliff to botanical garden and a Servite Monastery. And it's in the middle of the city, right next to the airport.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. If you're still in town on Friday, Motocorsa, the local Ducati dealer, is having a 796 unveiling part from 7-9. They always put on a good time.

Thanks for the list.  We won't have a car, so we're just planning on bumming around downtown and seeing what trouble we can get into.

I think I'm at XV on SW 2nd. I expect things to degrade from here.
