GPS Mount?
«
on:
June 24, 2010, 03:34:12 PM »
I am interested in a GPS mount for my m620, probably a "Ram" mount that goes right in the stem of the top triple... Problems include:
-How does one go about installing? Is that thing in the middle of my triple a big screw that just can be turned with a flat head screwdriver?
-I don't know much about wiring and I don't have a great place to work on this, would I be better off just having a dealer install it?
That's pretty much it, I just don't want to take a project on and get over my head with it...

There's a special tool to turn that screw. it looks like a socket with 4 or more pins sticking out to fit into those holes.
search the tutorials or tech for tips on mounting and wiring

I'm in the same boat as you. I just bought a Zumo 660 and a Techmount bar mount,
http://www.tech-mount.com/
to mount to my 696 for my ride to MotoGp. I don't know much about wiring stuff but my friend with some skills is going to give me a hand installing. From a search on this site ,the info I got is to tap into a keyed on and off power source, parking lights where one example, at the fuse block? How do I go about that
we shall see.
I will definitely post up the info when I get It done.

you can bolt to the bar clamp hold down bolts or it looks like you are buying the top triple nut with the special mount for the GPS. you have to remove the top triple clamp and you need the special top triple stem nut removal tool (fleabay $15). you can do that yourself, but you will also need a torque wrench to torque the top triple stem nut and the bolts for the top triple.
I didn't hard wire my GPS in but rather got the cigarette lighter adapter for my battery tender from powerlet. that way i don;t have any unsightly wires when I'm not using my GPS.

I believe the stem hole mounts are for the types with the open hole designed into them, like most Japanese bikes and aftermarket top clamps. There are also mounts for mirror factory holes if you are using bar end mirrors instead.

I found your posts during my search and your solution is the easiest and one route I may use because I will not use my gps all the time. My only problem is when using the mounts included with the zumo 660, only the car mount has the powerport adapter with a molded on windshield mount. The bike mount with the built in hard wire kit has the universal , 4 hole, mounting plate.

Yes I also have a battery tender connection, I was hoping I could tap into this. Where do you hide the cig lighter adapter? Can you post pics? Would be nice if they made a cable with that end already on it...
I don't plan on leaving the GPS hooked up when I'm not on the bike since I have shared parking, so it would just be something I would carry and hook up when I need to explore.
I have clip-ons with a Speedymoto top triple so it should look clean with a ram mount, do you know the torque specs or should I look in my Ducati manual for that?

Is this it?
http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Connector-Magellan-Blackberry-Satellite/dp/B0035G7MV6
This is my setup I need to find the best mount to work with... I think either way the GPS will block my view of the gauges but right now I don't know my way around where I live and I want to go far out for long rides without getting lost...

i like the idea of getting lost, stopping then looking at a map for more curvy roads
but honestly, how about a tank bag with a clear top?

nice top triple !
this is the cable I was talking about:
http://powerlet.com/product/sae-to-cigarette-socket-cables/319
you have a couble of options for mounting. I used a ring and ball mount that attached to the left mirror mount hole (just the way you have it upside down). if the gps unit is too heavy for that, you can also buy the steering stem nut with the ram mount hole from Desmo Times.
http://www.desmotimes.com/product89.htm
it ain't cheap though.

I've actually already got a clear top tank bag and have used my girl's Nuvi under it in the past... With the glare and battery life it was not ideal. I'm a bit of a gadget-nut and would like it stem mounted, plus I can get the unit at a discount so it's just the matter of mounting that I am held up on, I want it to be easy but nice, so far ram mount with that cig lighter cable seems to be the winner...
