They are different. As mentioned slipon "racing" ECU still needs to hear how the flapper-gate is feeling, whereas full "racing evo" ECU seeks no input for obvious reasons.  I expect (but dunno for sure) that the mapping is also a little different to take advantage of the more free flowing exhaust.

which makes me wonder if you have the full EVO ECU not expecting the flapper and ran than the 696 midpipe would you get close to the same performance as the full termi?

i think the lack of major difference was the ecu not the midpipe.

Perhaps, but I doubt it.  Using that logic, there oughta been a more noticeable performance improvement when going from stock ECU to slipon racing ECU.  I think the larger diameter pipes has gotta help  - M1100 stock exhaust with or without 696 midpipe only ever gets to 50mm once it reaches the Termi slipon's adaptor elbows.
