....because a mind is a terrible thing......

« Reply #1740 on: July 25, 2010, 12:12:29 PM »

Those who stayed home this morning made a wise decision.  I went to the Crest and encountered the cloud layer between the two right hand sweepers about two-thirds of the way to the Ski Area, then turned around.  On the way down I encountered a drizzle which evolved into a proper rain as I sat at CAD and enjoyed my breakfast.  I rode in a steady rain until half way between Tijeras and Tramway, where the sun came out and all was right with the world.

Maybe next week.  Wink

LMAO at Zaster's video.  Rode in the rain most of the way back to Colorado Springs.  It finally dried out after Trinidad.  Still a wet day on a bike is better than a dry day in a cage.   [moto]   It was great seeing so many of you yesterday.  See you in a few more days over in Ouray.

I did not ride the 21 miles along LI's North Shore yesterday to work on my sailboat as I had to bring along a new battery. I was working on the boat when a storm with 50mph winds hit. I rode it out, watching the sideways rain, for about 20 minutes. It was very intense- visibility was about 50 feet. When I took the launch back to the dock later, I was informed that a 22-ft sailboat had sunk a few hundred yards away, the crew rescued by the Harbor Patrol. We could see the bow sticking up out of the water.

Riding home would have been an adventure: When you live in an area with lots of trees and experience heavy winds, the roads are usually littered with downed branches and whole trees.

OK, here's your official Hwy 536, Crest Road report for Tuesday, July 27.

Summary (This is for you short attention span folks, you know who you are):
As of 11 AM today, Tuesday, the road was pretty good.  It was a little dampish on the way up but not bad.  It has a few scattered rocks and gravel near the ski area, and the usual light dusting of bicycles, but pretty good!  waytogo  ....You can now move along to the next post.  There's nothing else to see here folks......

Detailed Report (For those who want to know "Everything")  coffee :
The main areas of concern are near the Ski Area, just before and after.  Most of the junk is in the down hill lane since it is nearer to most of the cliffs and steep parts.   Notice this stuff on your way up the hill.  There is the usual gravel near the entrance to the Ski Area.

On the way down, above the Ski  Area there is a large boulder near a turn and at the edge of the road.  Further on will be a few small rocks in the road.  Then you will notice the gravel scattered across both lanes just downhill of the Ski Area entrance.  Below the ski area some rocks have fallen off the cliff and some small ones have bounced into the road. They are light colored.  So watch for them.

But it's a pretty good road other wise and it was a nice run.  ....I am now getting a little twitchy for another run..... You know that riding junkie sort of twitch....    cheeky

....Oh yes, I forgot to mention the goofy deer who had too much Amber Ale last night  drink  and was standing in a ditch as I came around one corner.  He was trying to decide "should I go across the road, .... should I go into the forest.  .... heads or tails.... hmmmmm, what to do?  ...He was also doing the "indecision foot shuffle" ...... first I put my left foot forward then I put my right...then I wiggle my butt....

All of this might have been more amusing, if I had not been on the brakes at a turn entry trying to avoid his indecisive, backside.....!!!  It was my fault for not remembering the "Cloudy Day - Deer" rule.

In any case the road is still fun, just be alert as usual.   -End of Official Report.   Grin

anyone [moto] this weekend....

Yes me!!!  Evil for a last scrub of the rear tire...Karl, I have to pass you few things and may do it next week for the Ouray trip. Post our ride, I have to hunt for a rear tire in ABQ...bad luck finding a good tire at a good price installed before next Friday for trip! Sad Tomorrow, I can leave early to meet at CAD around 8am. I just got back from a hot humid Nashville week! ready to roll  [moto]

Talked to Keith a fair length about the trip, we will miss his company! Advised on the crazy roads...can't be more anxious!  applause

Well, I guess that classifies as seeing you guys on the mountain (Zaster w/Cupcake...riding beautifully as always, JJ with his knee 6in. off the ground on a quick lead change rhythm section...How do you do that? you're like the Yoda of knee out, & DucDog sittin' on wheel like a lazy day cruise...Budda baby). After the ski area we never got behind a car, up, or down. But before that, You know you are behind a slow group of cars when it's 65deg. out and your engines water temp is at 213.

 Another perfect day!
