Very good!!!  Particularly as I understand it, this was his first and only model?   A project like this can be extremely theraputic...the concentration required keeps the mind sharp, as well as solving the inevitable problems and mistakes.  Kudos to him for not loosing interest and completing it!

My pops is 82 and has been continuously building flying models since he was 12 years old.  Both my brother and I literally learned our crafts at his knee.  He builds strictly from his own designs and has an amazing ability to solve problems in extremely elegant ways (he builds his own electric motors from modified hard-drive components).  He is starting to feel his age though...even though he still plays raquetball a couple times a week, his back is not allowing him as much time to work on his models as he would like.  I told him that he should build smaller planes...his current project is a 1/4 scale Beriev Be-103.

A previous project of his:

Thought there was a thread on here about model ship building, as I have just started thinking about restarting my ship model.

I got it about 6 years ago and have only made the frame of the ship, i.e bulkheads, deck and the jig it sits on. Have had to chamfer the bulkheads to put the planking in, that's where I stopped. Planking the keel has spooked me and made me stick it back in the cupboard, but I need to get back into this to keep my mind occupied lest I start doing things I shouldn't be doing.  Evil

Hopefully will be half as good as the one the OP posted.  waytogo

To think about building all the careful woodwork, knowing that all the sail and rigging was yet to do... Awesome job!

I've been on the Niagra when it was in Green Bay, WI for tall ship days.  I was with a friend of mine from PA that crewed on it earlier that year.  Pretty neat.  At Camp Perry, Ohio, there is a big mural on the wall in the main auditorium with the Niagra in its Naval Action on Lake Erie.
