Now explain the sale success of the MTS1200? To be honest if it was not so damn tall I might consider selling my ST3 to get one. - Gene
Donnie can't lower one for you? What about the Diavel Strada?

No on lowering and I don't see the Diavel Strada as a replacement for the ST3. I have ridden ~550 miles on a Diavel over 2 days, it's a nice bike but not something I would want to do a long distance tour on, you are locked into a seating position. The seating postion is not exactly correct, the pegs need to be moved a little. I had hopes for the Hyperstrada but it's just as tall as the MTS and it is actually worse because they mounted the bags higher than the seat, good luck getting the legs of my 30" inseam on/off without dragging on the bags. Meanwhile my ST3 is still fine, light, fast, comfortable - just wish it had the service interval of the newer bikes. - Gene

4 years? I had no idea the ST3 lasted so long. That's nearly as long as the 6 year runs of the ST2 and the ST4/S.
I'm with you on both "sport-touring" and "adventure touring". To me, the K1600, FJR1300 et al are sporty Gold Wings, not sport-tourers. I recently bought a MTS1200 to replace a first gen Multistrada and I bought both as sport-tourers in the mold Gene suggests. I want a bike that carry hard luggage easily and won't beat me up on the way to the twisties, but when I get there I don't want to wish I was on another bike. Both my first gen Multi and my current new 1200 fit that bill.
As for "adventure touring", I think dirt roads are to be generally avoided. That being said, when I do end up on a road with less than ideal surface conditions I do like the fact that the Multis (old and new) get much less out of shape than bikes with a more traditional sporting stance.
As for the success of the Multistrada 1200, the motor is a big part of it. The Testastretta 11 is a great motor. It's so great, people even buy it in the Diavel package.
Beyond that, it simply is a great overall one bike solution. Before I test rode one, I was concerned that it the bike had tilted a bit more towards the touring end of the S-T spectrum. The reality is that it
is
superior to the old bike from a touring comfort standpoint, but it loses little to nothing on the sport side. Despite being a bit roomier and gaining 40+ pounds, for me it is as nimble on tight technical roads as my 1000DS.
Just a note that I have a 32" inseam and once my 195# butt settles the suspension, I can flat foot the Multistrada 1200 on level ground. I think it can be lowered an inch, so if you haven't tried riding one, you might be closer than you think. Of course that's once you're on the bike. Even with my 32" inseam, it does take a bit of effort to swing the leg up and over in the first place.

And some brave souls even take them to the track

It looks like he's running the stock Scorpions. I would not recommend that. The Scorpions are actually a surprisingly good general purpose street tire, but they do not offer the outright grip of some of the other sport-touring tire options out there like the Road Smart II and certainly are a full two steps behind supersport tires. I would say I am only a moderately aggressive or fast street rider and I have found the limits of the Scorpions more quickly than previous tires.
There are some great Youtube videos out there of Multistrada 1200s on the track, eating sportbikes alive.

True but I cannot tell the difference in the picture from the Blue color Ducati used, still a fair question to ask why it was repainted. - Gene
So i've been emailing the guy about the bike. He claims to have painted it because he didn't like the old color so he had it done. Hard bags have also been color matched.
Belts havent been changed in 10k miles which is scary. I think if he'll drop the price to cover a valve/belt service it might be worth it.
