actually... I've always had a thing for small sports cars: lotus elise, MR2, old triumph spitfires and MG's, and most of all the Miata: fun, cheap and reliable.

But I'm not letting go of the 750 any time soon, the 900 is more likely to go before it!

a little info

this is an early wheel for a Cagiva Alazzurra.  ducati used the same wheels on the Bevels and the Pantahs, but it is marked CAGIVA so probably one of the 84-85 early Alazzuras

They are not well regarded, i usually see them at swap meets for around $50, with tire and rotor.

oooo that's nice.. high mount exhaust, color-matched vitaloni mirrors and custom seat too >>reaching for the Astrolube<<

but i doubt it's an SP

- missing the front CF fender
- has regular rotors not cast iron
- no SP plate
- coffin reservoirs
- wrong rear caliper


can't see the swingarm, but it looks like he upgraded it and the forks to SP type, as well as the fairings.

From what I can see, it's a 1995 CR.  Nicely done upgrades, but no plaque, no SP.

the differences are significant, the CR is a good bike all around, but the SP has much nicer components and is a limited edition.  i emailed the guy and asked about it, i don't think he was happy to find out that a real SP just sold on ebay for $2800.  prices for these bikes has plummeted...  Embarrassed

Besides why drop 5k on an SP when you can get a Monster like this one for the same money?

Some people might argue the mid-90's SS was one of the best looking bikes Ducati made.  Easily in the top 3 or 4.  Even rolling into 1998, they were still selling well and in 1999 when the Terblanche version came out, it dropped.  Not that the later model was horrible, it was good, but compared to the earlier one, it wasn't sufficient.

Power-wise, the SS got the better heads than the Monsters of the same year.  I am not sure about later years, but across the board, the SS had more hp for the same engine.

Plus, this is the bike that Hunter S Thompson wrote about.

I know what you're talking about, I'm 100% with you on the styling and everything else: I love the perfect simplicity of the SS lines!

I'm not sure about the heads tho, I think it comes from the V vs the W heads that were mixed on the Monsters.

Riding 900 Monsters with the detuned engine makes you wonder what the hell they thought they were going to achieve. It does explain, however, why the Elefants always felt slow for a 900.

I would Smiley  A '95 900 SS/SP was my first (modern) Ducati. A friend also had one (a CR) and we'd always hear from people how unreliable they were. The only problem I ever had (besides insureance payments) was that the gloss on the CF faded (a common prob across the range I believe). Oh, and I had a headlight connector melt. My friend got hit and tossed his down the road several times over the years and it kept on going.
I was sorely bummed when Ducati "upgraded" the bodywork.
