I'd stick with v2 Bimotas.
Not a bad suggestion.

The SB8R has a lightly tweaked TL1000R engine which isn't a bad lump - great character and performance just slightly ahead of a 998.
Heretic.

Another twin you might look at is the honda RC51 - its a great one and dead reliable.
Reliable yes, but it's heavy and turns in like a train.

The 675 looks very nice.
Why yes, yes it does.
Can you tell that I'm a bit biased here?

Not so many of those around at the moment. The guy that has this is the guy that sold me the 620 last year. He had a DB4 that I'm sad he's already sold. It was beautiful! As much a garage queen as the SB6R...and what's the point of having a bike if you're not gonna ride it!!

Uh oh dude, you're on a slippery slope
What next, some crappy vintage British bike?
You mean like this:
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mcy/2267199732.html?
Very cool and quite tempting! If only I knew jack-shit about restoring old bikes! Maybe I should come hang at Casa
for some lessons: need an apprentice?

Sure you wouldn't rather have a Buell Ulysses?
I already own one of your hand-me-down heaps!
and I love it!

The v2 bimotas are hard to find...
In support of heresy... The the TL vs 998 comment comes from having run my (high-mileage, generally thrashed and running a home-brew fuel map) '97 TLS against a (very nice) 998 back to back at a dyno day. The old TLS came out ahead, but only just. Compared to my TLS, the Bimota has shower injectors, bigger TBs, more aggressive cams, smaller head ports and more compression so it should be stronger still. The TLS and 998 both scored slightly ahead of a pair of Tuonos. A heavily modified RC51 eeked the TLS out by 1hp, but only after making half a dozen runs (the TLS only got 2 runs and the TL's first two runs bettered the RC51's first two runs by a smidge).
The RC51 is lighter than a 996 but heavier than a 999 (by 5lbs). Seems to turn ok to me, but I haven't had one on a track (wet, ready-to-ride weights as measured by MCN
http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/articles/2010JanIndex.pdf
) (and the TLS is 7lbs lighter than the 999
). The ducati is slimmer and imho feels lighter when riding than either the RC51 or TLS. I haven't ridden the TL powered bimota so can't comment there.

In support of heresy...
I was just giving you grief. Not really a fan of Japanese bikes myself, but that's just me.
I will still jump up and down and advise Jim to go take a look at that Daytona. I loved mine, and as I've said before, there are several times that I've really wished that I did not let it go to get the Super Duke. And as far as the price goes, I sold mine for $7500, and it had a thousand more miles on it than the one you're looking at here. Granted, it was one year newer, and one of the "limited" editions...

ya I know
I like 90 deg sporting twins regardless of their country of origin - of course most come from Bologna but japan has made a couple of good ones. I knew a guy who put over 200k miles on an RC51 with nothing but basic maintenance.

Ooops. My bad. The thing won't be lacking power then. That'd be a step up from a 2 valve twin (says the guy who currently has 6 in his basement ... but not for loooong...)

Maybe, once you tell him that it'll do 140.
