The Yamaha seems like crazy fun, but it will probably require an oil change a week (a la Aprilia SXR). The DRZ is much more interesting (decent HP and normal maintenance), I found a few local ones on supermotojunkie.com

DRZs are pretty slow unless you mod the heck out of them.  Not necessarily a problem, just don't expect too much.  I have fun on a 17hp DR250 sometimes so power isn't everthing, but DRZ's are only good for about 33hp in stock form and those 33hp don't even come on very quickly - heavy flywheel and sedate throttle response.  If you convert them to E model spec (FCR, exhaust, different base gasket for more compression etc) you can get around 38hp which isn't too bad in a light bike and throttle response improves dramatically.  Bomb it out with big bore, high compression, cam etc you can see in the mid 40s.  Folks have gotten even more hp from them, but it tends to get really expensive and reliability becomes questionable.

A sumo'd XR650R would be fun on the street I think.  Decent, though not insane power, rugged and reliable and the power it does make comes on really low and pulls hard.  Not unlike the power curve you get from an 1100 desmo.  Power is in the low 40s stock and you can sneak up on 50hp with mods, but that's about the cealing.  Fortunately they don't weight any more than a DRZ.  Kick start only and only available as a dirt bike though so work to be done to make it a sumo.

MFI had Husqvarna SM450s for, I think, $5k not long ago and that Duke 690 for $6k would make a heck of a good street motard.

The yamaha would make a great track toy.  A bit maintenance intensive for the street, but not horribly so.  Change oil every 800ish miles and it'd be good I'd think.  The valves in those hold up quite well.  Note though that it has a very close ratio 5spd gearbox so you'd need to run really tall gearing inorder to be able to go freeway speeds without revving its gutts out.  Also it vibrates a bit.
