Well, that price is between KBB trade-in and retail values and it *is* 16 years old, so not abnormally low. That said, still a great price for a great bike provided it is in excellent shape with low miles.

I would be more concerned with the electrical wiring than the miles on a 16 year old Italian motorcycle... might give you more than a few moments, followed by plenty of

  I owned a couple of those and my dad had a third.  Lots of low-mid power, no top/overrev, loads of vibration, pistons tend to fragment (but bottom ends are bulletproof and the wiseco in the linked bike should hold up ok, mine did), don't handle very well.  I got better laptimes at budd's on my 125s and worked half as hard doing it I think, was faster still on a 250, but more work than the 125.  The 500 was big fun in a straight line.  The KX500 has a significantly better motor, but an even more archaic chassis.  I think these things best suit large, lazy riders who can't be bothered shifting or nabbing the clutch.  The 500 pulls so hard off the bottom you can start in any gear.  I usually left the line in 3rd and didn't have to shift all the way to the first turn unless the start was really long.  It pulled 4th gear starts just fine too   .  They are also an absolute blast in the dunes, but the chassis doesn't soak up really hard landings like a modern(ish) bike so make sure to hit a good downslope.

If I lived near big dunes I'd have a KX500 motor stuffed in a stiff aluminum chassis.    On anything other than sand or loam it'll be hard to keep up with a current 450 in a straight line as the 450 hooks up better.

Yeahhhh, I don't have $60k+  to drop on a pickup. 

I found a nice used 04 Lariat crew cab with the long bed and a cap.  It had the egr delete and the other appropriate 6L issues dealt with.

The short bed is more to my liking .......haven't driven a long bed crew cab.  The thing is a beast!

Just saw a youtube video of one of these for sale: I wish they made an SUV based on it! With a smaller 3-4 liter turbo diesel engine for decent mileage, and about the size of the Ford Explorer. Wonder if an engine swap was possible...

the 350 is just too damn big. If you need more than an F250, then you should be looking at something like a Unimog.

Not really on the size, the 250-450 are all physically the same size and sit on roughly the same frame (except for dual rear wheels on the 450 and optional on the 350).  Main difference between them is spring rates, final drive gearing and that sort of thing.  You basically just pick the stiffness based on how much weight you wanna tow.  My dad uses a 450 for pulling his toyhauler.  I use a 250 for pulling my box trailer full of dirty bikes    They don't physically get any larger until you get into medium-duty trucks (F650+ in ford language).

Oh, and unimogs can hardly move themselves -  you certainly wouldn't wanna tow a 20k lbs trailer over the rockies with one!

FWIW I'd be really hesitant about buying a 6.0L - just not a very efficient or reliable motor.  I'd rather have the gas motor or the old 7.3L, either of which shouldn't cost any more than the 6.0L.  The current PSD seems quite good, though it is still pretty new.

The duramax isn't bad and the 5.9 cummins is great (but comes wrapped in a not-so-great truck).

I'm pretty positive swapping a smaller motor into an F350-sized truck won't get you any more mpg.  It 'll still take the same amount of energy to move that much weight and push that much wind.  The big diesels are quite efficient in terms of hp/lbs of fuel.  Also there are hardly any decent small diesels in the states to swap in.  A small, modern, efficient diesel in a lighter and more aero truck could be cool, but honestly as good as modern DI gas motors are I think diesel makes less and less senses these days except for towing huge loads.  Jeep put a little diesel in their little SUV.  It didn't sell well, was sorta crapy and mpg didn't blow people away.

The V6 F150 is quite efficient and the ecoboost V6, which is similarly efficient, tows almost like a diesel.  That's the direction I'll most likely head if I ever wear out the old 7.3 F250.

There is a local contractor, "Rembrant Builders" that has a unimog in its fleet.....impressive machine!  They must be making some serious $$s!

From what Ive read the only differences between the 250 and 350 SRW is 4 spring blocks vs 2 on the 250 and standard tire size 265 vs 235 on the 250.

The 7.3 is an undesputed workhorse!  Again, from what Ive read, the 6L had some issues that were ironed out with a couple mods.  Ive seen several for sale with "new" motors.

A 2hp winch will move stuck things very slowly as well.  For that matter so can I with a leverage multiplier.  Neither it, me, nor a Unimog is any good at towing in a practical sense.  If you wanna crawl up passes at 2mph a 'mog might be ok    If you wanna run something like the speed limit up a pass (or anywhere) a 'mog won't do it.  No matter how cool you look, 80hp won't move a 20,000lbs trailer up a mountain at anything like a normal road speed.

The 6L's issues aren't all easily fixed with basic mods.  For one, it hasn't got enough head bolts/studs to keep the cylinder heads firmly attached to the block.  Now if you don't mod it and don't push it too hard and are a bit lucky it could last quite well -- it isn't a bad performer.

I don't need a full size truck but since Ford won't sell the new 2012 Ranger in the States and Dodge discontinuing the Dakota, the compact truck market seems like slim pickings. Ideally, there would be a compact truck option with 3.0L diesel powerplant but I'm not holding my breath.
