I decided to upgrade the shock on my M1100.  I ordered an Ohlins DU738 shock to replace the Sachs unit.

That yellow spring just sticks out on my silver/black/red bike (both the Sachs & Ohlins unit have yellow springs).

Now, I'm thinking this would be the perfect opportunity to change the color of the spring.  I want some advice; can I just use some urethane paint (I have some Color Rite in Ducati red from when I painted the headlight surround) or will it need to be powder coated.  I'm just not sure if the paint will stand up to the flexing.  I guess the stock spring is painted, but before proceeding, I'd like some opinions.

Or, should I just leave it yellow and be happy.

My own with experience rattlecan paint tells me it'll look nice, but not for long. Between road debris and flexing it starts to look pretty bad, pretty quick.

I rattlecanned my Ohlins spring.
I run a full OEM rear hugger on my S4.
Still looks as good as new IMO.

I powdered coated mine from the stock yellow to black. No issues so far. Have over 1000 miles on them since.

I should have been more specific.  I have the Color Rite three step paint, primer, color coat and clear coat and I use a HVLP gun to spray paint.  I was just wondering if the paint will be flexible enough and I was looking for experience in that regard.  I have the DP hugger so the shock stays pretty clean; some chain lube occasionally but urethane should be able to withstand that.

Yuu, the shock sock is an option but not the one I'd prefer at this time.

Raux, GET UP OFF YOUR LAZY A55!!!  LOL

I know powder coating is the best option, I was just hoping I could do something myself.  I have a buddy with a powder coating setup but he is out of country right now.

Ducpainter, where are you when I need you???

How about this?

http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

I used it for a bunch of tool handles a while back and it worked great. I've been thinking of trying it on my own shock so if you try it be sure and let us know how it works out.  waytogo

What about talking to a business (e.g. autobody shop) that paints - they should be able to steer you in the right direction.

Or.... just send the spring to Ducpainter. I'm sure he would know what to do with it.

i would totally run that if you wanted to keep the chrome on the shock. dont need to clean ur shock, and keeps it working for a lot longer of a time. You barely notice it. If you want it to look sexy though, then nothing beats a sick color like penske purple, or blue, or hot orange.
