«
on:

Hi, i have searched the forum tutorials section for the Airbox Chop/Mod. I am wondering if anyone has any info on how to do it correctly and the +'s and -'s of doing it.
Cheers

i cut a rectangular opening in the back of mine, lots open it up completely by just keeping the ring that clips down to hold the filter in place but the cut out in the tank around the key acts like a funnel and it can fill with water. get a K&N filter too, if it does get wet it will survive better than a std paper element.

lots more induction noise, probably louder than the exhaust.

If you haven't already, you'll need to do an ECU upgrade if you have the full system on.
If you cut the lid yourself, leave about 30 to 40 mm around the lid above the lid clips. This will minimize water getting in where the key lives but still gives you plenty of air induction.
Go for it!

I just have a set of termi slips ons, im getting a new mid pipe to get rid of the udder, so even though the headers will still be stock (but im sure i will replace them with larger in due CORSE
) im guessing it will still be ok for the chop?
I havent seen to much info ( a bit to my surprise) on the net or this forum.... Am i missing something? Is this mod frowned upon?

rule of thumb:
replace exhaust only is generally OK without major adjustment of air/fuel. it is somewhat model dependent, but generally OK - bike just runs a little lean. on older bikes (without the udder) this could be for either slip ons or full system. Not sure about udder bikes - I would think the udder in place still is the main restrictor of exhaust gases
replace exhaust (and udder) and open airbox means usually your bike will run very lean, and you'll need to adjust the air/fuel - accomplished by a replacement ECU (DP or aftermarket - DP is usually sold with the Termi Kit and is still basically non adjustable, but adds more fuel) or the addition of a piggyback system (such as a powercommander). a further option is that people have cracked the std ECU, allowing a reflash to DP spec (which also typically disables the immobiliser - handy if you do not have the red key)
Thats a very simplistic guide, hope it helps.

ok the previous owner of my S2R put the full Termi system on, had the DP ecu installed and the Melbourne dealer cut the air box and put a DP air filter (which I have since replaced with a KN), to which I have added a pic for your perusal! Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot for posting that MrS2R. it makes sense now where to cut now i can see it.
Must say that looks like precision cutting of the box, definetly not a chop with a blunt hacksaw!

Hey happy to help! I think this is what Paul (loony888) was talking about when he said opening up the box with just the clips. As I said mine was done at the dealership when the previous owner had it. Something else to consider is this:

Good luck! [moto]

no, it was vossy that said that, but your pic describes what he was on about perfectly i think. i occasionally get caught in a serious downpour, usually when i'm on a ride with mick (monsterdorf) and prefer to have most of the cover in place, so my letterbox is behind the intake snorkel.
