Is this maybe what the "frameless" patent is initially spawning?
Might be quite a bit lighter than it looks.
I'll reserve judgement until the final product exists...and even then I'll say nothing as my opinion is worthless

I'll bet you just about anything that Ducati thinks the new Multistrada
is
the ST replacement.
I agree. There would be too much overlap between a true ST and the MTS12. Sure a new ST might be marginally better on long slab rides, but the MTS12 is still very capable and is probably more comfortable due to the seating position. The seating position was a common complaint of the last ST models, as it is for the VFRs and some other ST models. The MTS also offers more versatility than a true ST.
The MTS12 went hard after GS riders, the majority of whom use them as tourers.

the MTS is too 'offroady' for those who are looking for more wind protection for the long highways and autobahns.
I don't what your experience has been, but on several long, high-speed rides my MTS1200 has provided plenty of wind protection. Perhaps this is due to my having come from Monsters (thus maybe having very low expectations), but my personal experience is that it provides much more protection than it looks as if it should be able to.

well maybe i'm in left field, but i think the ST replacement would be a much prettier bike than the MTS. and using the MTS as the basis for it, would be perfect. similar ergos, similar equipment, different style.

First thing I thought was 'Suzuki Boulevarde' with the style of the headlight and cowl.
IMHO, it looks OK, but reserving judgement till the final product is done. Don't think I would buy one though. I'm finding it hard buying anything atm.

Not hard to do in the looks dept.!
I think it'd be hard to make a ST style bike with the same frame and thus seating position though. Maybe start with a Streetfighter frame and go from there.

the sketch was "reportedly sourced from a dealer here in the United States." I wonder if DaveR knows a little more about this bike than the rest of us.

welll whether we like it or not, it's gonna be made.
now if it sticks around or goes like the Indiana... we'll see.
personally I hope the next two projects Ducati is working on are the ST and SS replacements
development costs for both would be VERY low
the ST would use the new MTS lowered with body work
the SS would use the new Monster platforms with bodywork and clipons and new rearsets
Hope you're right about the ST.
But I think mstevens might be right. Let's hope not.

That drawing looks good, unlike the spy pics.
Also, it reminds me of the CR&S Duu

I think it's cool -- the concept image! As mentioned before, I think this would be a nice compliment to the existing Ducati lineup currently -- it doesn't replace any existing model and it could bring back people who left the Ducati world to ride something else.
Also I have received some "hate e-mail" recently from some folks who blame me personally for Ducati building this style bike. (due to my DesmoDevil series of bikes built for many years) If true -- that Ducati found some bit of inspiration in my bikes and for building -- I'd actually consider that a compliment. I've enjoyed my own DesmoDevil as the 6th anniversary of it's debut was last week. (and all of my customer DesmoDevil's are still owned by their original owners and enjoyed today as well)
If Ducati build something like the above concept -- yes, I'd buy it. Undoubtedly I'd make a few small changes to it! But even I realize that it is better to buy a mass produced Ducati and tweak with a few weekends -vs- building a one-off engineered and built shop within my facility that might takes months or a year plus to build. It would save me the trouble of building myself the 170+hp DesmoDevil I have wanted to build ever since building one for a customer a few years ago.

Supposedly this isn't so much concept as sketched final. According to "my source"
