Is there a difference between the silver 1100 and gold 1100s wheels, other than color?

None whatsoever.

IMHO the 796 gets nicer lookin' wheels than either 1100 (although I think the 796's are Enkeis rather than Marchesinis).

At least with the HM when you lay down the extra $$$ to go the "s" model it buys you a pair of lighter forged Marchesinis.....

Do you know who makes the 796 wheels for sure. I have been looking into a sss for my bike (i know it's a stupid idea) but I believe the 796 wheel will fit along with the 848 and 1100

Actually, I think that the 1100 wheels are cast and the 1100s wheels are forged.  Shaves a total pound off but whos counting...

nope, like someone else said....the wheels are the same other than color.

I was asking about the 796. my 696 has the marchesini wheels, 3 spoke. If I convert to a sss I need to get a new rear wheel.

Wrong.  M1100 and M1100s wheels are identical in all but colour.  Neither are forged wheels.

Enkei on the 1100 and 1100 S as well, I believe it was a mid year model change from March's to Enkei since the new left over 09 1100S I just bought has the gold cast enkei's on it.

I knew 696 made the swap form Marchesini to Enkei, didnt know 1100/1100s had also switched.  My 09 M1100s came with Marchesinis.  Regardless - Marchesinis or Enkies - wheels on M1100 and M1100s are identical 'cepting for the colour.

If you compare your M1100 wheels to those fitted to HM"S" you'll see the difference.  Standard HM gets the same wheels as on both M1100 models, but the HM"S" gets forged wheels.  For some reason (hahaha could it be cost?) the M1100 misses out.
