brake rotor option
«
on:
July 29, 2010, 01:22:34 AM »
I'm in the process of doing the brake upgrade.
I've got myself some 4 piston calipers from an S2r1000 and now I need to get some 320mm rotors.
Anyone know what offset I need?
Where is a good place to buy some? I don't really want to buy from O/S as postage is probably going to be prohibitive.

I have heard the offset referred to indifferent ways, from memory I think you want a 10mm offset ... the stock rotors having 0mm offset. Basically any rotors for the Monsters with the same calipers should be OK (S2R1k or any of the bikes with the Goldlines).
I bought my rotors from O/S ... but won't most options be O/S for you
Sorry I'm too tired to do check properly, but these are some of the threads you might find useful about the offset:

10mm offset.
6 hole mount.
I got some from
http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/shop/catalog/index.html
a useful chart
http://braketech.com/images/docs/btwebapps.6-10.pdf
(Iron rotors for me because not enough bits are covered in rust)

Echoing the above, my research indicates 10mm offset. OEM rotors are part no. 492.4.029.1A, and are expensive.
There's heaps of choice in the 320mm, 6 hole, 10 mm offset size, as that's a very common size used on many larger ducs.
I was toying with the idea of getting braketech rotors from CA cycleworks (
http://www.ca-cycleworks.com/shop/catalog/ducati/brakes.html
), but instead found a set of oem ones relatively cheaply here on the boards.

What does that actually mean?
So there have been a couple of suggestions for Braketech (iron and I assume stainless) ... but no mention of their Ceramic Matrix Composite rotors - c'mon you know you want to.
Oh and let us know how they go ... OK so you won't be able to afford petrol but once you get used to the life of a single man you might be able to get out for a ride occasionally

The OEM brakes on the M1000DS have warped and have been that way since 6,000k!
Even after getting the carriers aligned and the discs ground they lasted about 8,000k and they are knackered again!
From what I have been able to find out Ducati had some crappy discs on or about the 2005 mark.
If I had the $$$ I'd just lurv a set of cast iron jobbies, but I got a set of superbike rotors (Thicker)at a reasonable price and they'll be going on!

from about 2002 actaully dragon, the snowflake rotors are notorious for warping, they're gold alloy carriers with stainless brake rotors, if you replace the std buttons with floating buttons the warping issue doesn't happen and they become a good street rotor with the right pads. motowheels sell the button kits, otherwise braking make some serious brakes, i'd go for cast or ductile iron and the correct pads from SBS myself, reasonable pricing from what i've seen.

Dragon....that bloke who did your straightening....loves OEM....and my 2006 never had a problem (but I knew about the 2003 DS ones had the problem....so perhaps 03-05 is the issue).
I know I lost about 600grams in weight from a 5 bolt OEM to a 6 bolt superbike (999/S4rs - 2006 as well) numbers. so the thicker part doesn't make sense...the snowflake design isn't that different. there is something going on.....bike weight savings!
you could get some OEM and then have them machined into 'wave rotors' with Dragons man, that sounds good.
and if you need spaces to fill the offset....I have a set on cnc'd ones in black for the s2r wheels.

Yep R. He did a brilliant job on my original discs, but bit by bit the woofle came back and my teeth (Whats left of 'em
) were getting rattled ev ery time I put the brake on.!
My standard units are 6 bolt so a lot discs off the "sportier" bikes with the 10mm offset bolt straight on.
Hmmm the "Dragon Wave"??

the thicker rotor takes a lot more heat and dissipates it better, limiting warping funnily enough. the extra weight is needed for race applications, but the unsprung mass in total is lower through exotica like titanium fasteners mag or carbon wheels, billet calipers etc. etc.

I think these ones are the prettiest, if that counts for anything.
And as we know, it's
