I am selling a lens on craigslist.

Someone contacted me and offered the asking price of $2000, but i have to ship it to europe (where his brohter lives). He already gifted all $2000+shipping to me via paypal and it has cleared in my account. I have the item wrapped up already and i searched his email online. After i received payment, i googled his email and it shows up in a church news letter. Hes a regular guy and it has his home number. I called it to make sure no one is stealing his stuff, but hes not picking up. And I dont want to leave a msg because his wife is the one who is on the answering machine (some people are touching with that kinda cash).

So as far as I know, i have the funds, they have been gifted to me, and there is no way for him to scam it back. So I'm just going to send the camera lens out via USPS Express mail like he requested. He saw all the 3mb High def pics i took of it so theres no question about condition, and I guess since it was linked to my own personal website(theres tons of pics of me and who i am) he feels comfortable enough to send me all that money....

any reason to doubt ?

I wouldn't think so, but don't forget.......paypal can withdraw that money from your bank account just as easily as you are putting it in yours...............

yes they can. But on his end, he would have to say cancel a credit card that he used. But if he used a credit card, it wouldnt of completeed so quickly right?

I would be concerned about shipping it to his "brother" in Europe.

If he is in the U.S. tell him you'll only ship to his Paypal verified address. Let him deal with the logistics from there.

Because it was on Craig's List, I would run away as fast as you can. There's no way to know if he gained access to someone else's account and paid you that way. Thats been happening a lot lately.

Or, tell him you'll be happy to sell him the lens but you'd feel better if he would buy it through Ebay and list it as a private auction and send him the link. Then make sure he pays through Ebay by clicking the Paypal link after the auction.

No, it's instant just like if it came from his bank account. The only time is takes longer is if it's an E-check.

I don't use a CC on Paypal, so I am not sure of the transaction time it takes. If it is like most CC's, I think they process rather quickly, just depends on when the vendor (i.e. paypal) submits their batch to the 3rd party processing company they use.

On a random note......I refuse to use craigslist for what Mash listed.


The story is very believable as maybe the Lens is cheaper here in the states and to save money.....he wants you to drop ship to his brother in Europe, who of course will have to pay duty on it.

Make sure in your paperwork at the USPS you fill it out correctly and reference the transaction with any reference numbers, etc. Also, make sure the cost of the duty is on him and not you. See if you can do signature delivery.

Personally.......I'd use FEDex or DHL for this. Better tracking capabilities in the event it is fraud.

well i called paypal and the money has been sitting there for several hours and they got it from a legit source and it has all cleared.

Basically if the money is clear, get it into an account paypal can *not* withdraw from, and you'll be safe. This is why it's good to be careful what accounts/credit cards you link them to.

well if the guy retracts the money some how, ill still have a negative balance in my paypal account. so its not like i can get away from paypal. Once the item is delivered, i will make sure he got it. and that will be that.

I have a separate checking account I use for Paypal, but you can't "block" them from debiting your account.

I tried to set up ACH Filter on this account, but since they dump money and pull from it, they already have the means to be an accepted debitor.

Therefore, if they pulled the funds, sent me into negative balance, I'd pay 15$ to chase for them to move money from one account to the overdrafted one.

Well i sent it. He said, please dont send a brick ( i thought that was kinda funny) and is asking for scans of the form, and the customs papers.

So far so good. Kinda sketchy. The lens is $2200 brand new, and i had it on CL for $2000 flat. Its pretty much mint aside from the lens cover has a scratch on it, but thats just a small cosmetic issue...

all a buyer has to do with a credit card-funded paypal transaction is dispute the charge/transaction/etc with their card. payal will credit the buyer's card and then come after you for the balance.

it is highly unlikely the seller wins in a case like this.

I hate paypal, but it is a necessary evil.

Been screwed on two transactions (paid and never got product) and got shit out of the dispute with Paypal.

My wife sold her old ipod and the buyer claimed the screen was scratched during shipping and wanted 90% of her money back.

It was virtually impossible that happened because I packed the ipod and am incredibly anal about bubble wrap, good boxes, and just overall protective packaging.

I even had photos of the packing process (just in case this shit happens) and the pregnant dog still won the dispute.

My wife got screwed out of around 80$ on the deal.

MOVE THE MONEY OUT OF PAYPAL IMMEDIATELY !!
Use your paypalcard to transfer the cash into your bank account. It is quicker than having paypal initiate a direct deposit into your account, as this takes 3-5 days.

The reason for removing the money is that it makes it harder for paypal to rule against you im a dispute because paypal no longer has control of the money, and can't just unilaterally pass it back to the buyer.

I had a similar situation where the buyer wanted his money back because the mantel clock I sent him didn't keep accurate time. Initially, paypal tried to refund him the purchase and shipping. When they realized that there was a zero balance in my account, they contacted me and told me that I needed to add the funds. I then opened a dispute against the buyer, pointing out that in the auction I had mentioned that mechanical clocks often needed to be accurized after traveling, and that this was not a defect. I had also mentioned in the auction that refunds would only be given after receipt of the item being returned in the same shape as it was sent, and that return shipping was to be paid by the buyer.

Paypal reviewed all of this, and ruled against the seller. If I hadn't pulled that money the day I got it, I would've been screwed, with no money, and no merchandise.

so GET THAT MONEY OUT OF THERE ASAP
