Does that mean I have to take the fuel cap off to get to the fuel filter. Sorry I'm a builder with little mechanical knowledge

no youll have to remove fuel tank completley ond turn it up side down and take the complete fuel injection pump out its not a big job but be for you do that you need to buy a new oring and oring grease some times oring is ok but have found they generaly dont like be disturbed cheers bazz , ps when you fire your bike up arfter deing out of fuel dont try to start it straight away  turn your key on let the fuel pump run till it stops turn key of and repeat this step again , this is to purge all the air out  waytogo

don't bother with a timing light, it's all controlled by the ecu so you can't change it anyway. i run 98 in both mine and have never had an issue with it, if it is fuel related it's probably a clogged fuel filter or a dead plug, both of which can occur from any grade of fuel. yes, the filter is inside the tank, but it's not too hard to replace, just don't drop anything in the tank!!!

Thanks for the information.
Could i pick your brains and ask
1) Where, (if you know) would I get the parts at a reasonable price? I have had a look at Moto Wheels and the price of the fuel filter is $15 but the shipping is $79US.
2) I have had a look at a manual and there seems to be two fuel filters, is that correct, if so would you recommend changing both? What has your experience been in the past?

Don before you go pulling the tank off and changing fuel filters, what is the situation with the plugs?
As I said I did this twice before I learned about fuel and didn't need to change fuel filters or anything.
Have you tried new plugs yet?
Try the first step first then think about fuel filters.....

If I have missed a step and the plugs didn't work then sure move on and try the next thing.

yeah mattyvas is right, try the plugs first, they're much easier to change than the filter!!!
if it's a steel tank you take the filler assembly out, i think the plastic tank has the bottom entry type assembly like the superbikes.

loony the timing light is the yoused to make shore that theres nothing wrong with spark for each cylinder watch the timing light as bike is reved to watch for electrical break down,taking a plug out turning the engine over see if there is spark is not reconmended

hello again
 I have tried putting new spark plugs today, no luck. So then I tried the timing light and i have spark on the back two plugs but no spark on the two plugs on the front cylinder. What do you suggest now? New leads or is it a new ECU?

Try Gowie's as you have been to before.
Or you could go a little further up the road to Fly Wheels.

check your connections at the coils, could just be a wire has fallen off. i wouldn't think it's your HT leads, both wouldn't fail at the same time, but if both plugs on the front cyl are supplied from one coil i would guess either it has failed or there's a wiring issue central to that.

Perhaps you could swap connections to coils or leads to see if the problem swaps from front to back cylinders.
Might help with the troubleshooting.

'02 M900ie, DP CF mufflers, DP mirrors, CF side covers, beer tray, belt covers, and sprocket cover, K&N filter, clear indicators, Speedymoto 5 spoke clutch cover, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

they beat me to it but be fore you do any thing if you have access to a multi meter i talk you through testing the coils  coffee

I thought Id give you an update where I'm up to. I checked the coils swapping them and checking them with a multi-meter and they are ok. So now we think it is the pick up on the stater, does that sound right?
