No worries - there's plenty of room for lots of different styles; to be honest, I've got no intention of competing in the $100+ tactical bottle opener market. 

That said, incorporating a bottle opener in the handle portion would be fairly straightforward and something I'll try on future iterations - the trick will be to make it both functional and good-looking.

You need to make one with a bottle opener for the handle.

I'd take at least 1, maybe 3.

Those little 1095 forged cutters are pretty neat!  Its a great steel choice - they should cut like mad and pretty darn tough to boot.

Made up a couple of test mules for a knife I think might be fun to make in significant numbers. I was remembering the tiny little sheath knife I made & used to carry on my belt - under a suit, as I was working on Capitol Hill at the time - it was perfect for 98% of the things I use a knife for in my daily, office-bound life. Basically, a box-cutter blade on a handle that's small enough to fit into the standard size of a folding pocket knife. While the one I made years ago had a fairly thick walnut handle, I want to make these flat enough that they'll fit in a sheath and take up as little room as possible in a pocket.

The steel is just bits of 1095 file steel for now. I put edges on them just a few minutes ago, and there's no longer a cardboard box within sight that doesn't have a collection of gashes & big pieces missing. So far, they're fun little knives that cut like they're supposed to.



I'm going to carry one of these for a while, give the other to Ann-Marie and seed them out to friends as I make more to get some feedback on the blade & edge shape (one's got an extremely fine, compound-bevel edge, the other has a single-bevel, relatively rugged edge), handle shapes, etc. That, and whether or not this is an idea that people on Etsy or elsewhere might actually buy...

Thanks for the feedback; I've got some ideas about how to add a bottle opener tab to the handle so that it'd work while the sharp bit remains in the sheath  -- I'll give that a try on an upcoming iteration, and see if I can get it to both open a bottle AND still fit comfortably in a pocket.

Alas, it looks like most of my shop time for the week will be taken up this afternoon doing an introduction to welding with 21 high school students in a "Found Object Art" class. It'll definitely be rewarding it its own way, but not all that productive in terms of getting my stuff done.

Personally not worried about the bottle opener.  I like them they way they are and interested in getting a few once you start banging them out.

I think the easiest way to do a bottle opener would be to open up the little curlicue on the bottom of the knife with the twisty handle. Just a thought.

Just signed up for a basic blacksmithing class.  I've been forging knives for 6 or 7 years but I ran right past the part of learning the basic blacksmithing techniques.  I'm looking forward to adding some skills and abilities.  They also run a forge welding class and an axe making class where hardened steel is forge welded into the formed eye of the axe.  I've got a pile of axes but it would be cool to forge one of my own.
