my personal opinion, Emerson is probably the best feeling knife. they are typically made from the 154cm which is a more than good steel. i also make knives. i work specifically with cpm154, cpm s30v and 440c for my bigger blades.

s30v is probably my favorite steel and is great for razor sharp edges but fawk its not easy to sharpen in the field.

production knives though... emerson gentleman jim has got to be the sickest knife on the market.

From what I've seen, S30-V is a pretty awesome steel.  What is the heat treat procedure for it?

Though CRKT lists it as discontinued, the Hammond appears to be fairly widely available still at retailers - and at a discount! Personally, I prefer single-edge knives for almost everything, mostly because I have a tough enough time not opening a vein with just one edge to keep track of...  YMMV

I'm not a diver, but I've always found true dive knives (like the Underwater Kinetics) to be more bulky & heavy than what I'd want to keep handy in a kayak.

Have you looked at the NRS Pilot & Co-pilot? They look to me like clever designs for a freshwater knife, and there's a titanium version if you want bling and absolutely no rust ever.

Wish they made the gentleman Jim with the wave feature.

the gent does come with or without the wave feature. Emerson is always on back order with their popular knives. From what i understand ernie no longer runs the business. i believe his son and daughter run it now.

Just saw the NRS at REI. May pick it up tomorrow.  Has a few more features than that CRKT and only $39.

well powder steel isnt like other stainless and to really get a good treat and temper i chose not to do it myself and sub it out. ive tried a few times to do it myself but without using the freezing procedure and dry ice, i just couldnt achieve the finish i wanted. That said, it doesnt cost much to get it subbed out and works out betterin the long run since i can spend less time of my own doing the heat treat and temper and more time on designs, grinding and shaping the handles. if youre really interested in the s30v, check out the crucible website and they have a full spec sheet on all their steels.

At least you know they're not popping them out like Cold Steel!

Just my tastebuds but I have not seen one Emerson knife that I like.

There are a lot of Goofy looking Emersons.....Ill give you that.  The Mini-CQC7, the Micro Commander and the A100 are my faves.  My wife bought me a full size Commander a few years ago and that thing is way too bulky for daily carry.  Will gut a deer like no ones business though!

Their factory edge is stoopid sharp!

From what I hear, the Emerson are as sharp as they come. They look pretty basic. I just haven't found one for me out of all the ones that have been posted. I should check out the website though to see the whole line.

I just noticed that SOG knives are on sale again for the next two and a half days at The Clymb - http://www.theclymb.com/home (it's a sign-in only site; if you want to sign up for their daily deal e-mails on outdoor gear you can do it at the link above, or you can have them toss me a $10 credit if you buy something after signing up through this link http://www.theclymb.com/invite-from/triangleforge). If you're already signed up with them, the direct link to the SOG Tool sale is http://www.theclymb.com/brand-event/1315/SOG

SOG Tool seems to pop up there every couple of months; last time around, I picked up a SOG Aura Hunting like this one:

Hopefully, I'll get to give it more of a workout this fall, but so far I like the blade quite a lot. The handle design, not so much - it grips best an inch or more below the bolster, while I prefer a grip with my index finger right up under it. Looking at the photos, I'd probably have been happier with one of the variations of the Field Pup, which wasn't on offer last time around. Time (and a deer or elk on the ground) will tell.

Just picked up the NRS Copilot river knife. $39. Not bad. Haven't tested it yet.

Glad you like it!  Now go cut some stuff-just nothing that requires a trip to the ER!  I'm just about done with the 13 that I am working on.  Hope the other one met with approval too.
