I saw this article this morning.  derby?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100913/ap_on_re_us/us_motorcycle_noise

A crackdown on loud exhausts makes me a little sad, but I don't know how to promote motorcycling and expect people to tolerate loud bikes at the same time  Undecided.  I don't live in CA, but I put my removeable baffles back in last fall and haven't removed them since.  Initially I did it because I felt a little guilty, but now I actually prefer it.

I love my bikes and their aftermarket pipes but I am very conscience of their ability to piss people off. I don't blip the throttle at intersections and don't pound downshifts through the neighborhood. Not to pick on Harley and metric cruisers but they do seem to be the biggest offenders. Yeah, sure, there is always some teenager on a loud pipe 600 bouncing it off the rev limiter in town but the straight piped v-twin bikes far out number them. At least in my town. My neighbor (who's great guy!) loves to warm up his straight piped Harley at 7:00AM for weekend rides and I swear it idles for 10 minutes outside our bedroom window then he blips the shit out of the throttle for another 10 minutes while he adjusts his do-rag and finally leaves. Not the kind of weekend alarm I need. bang head

I do see this kind of law becoming more and more popular. Lots of people don't like bikes and they would love to pass laws that pick on us. They don't think twice about all the "tuned" Civics with their fart can mufflers or all the tens of thousands of screaming 2 stroke weed eaters and leave blowers. Why don't they stick EPA mufflers on those?

article: "For years, residents in Pavley's district have complained about bikes that rumble along Pacific Coast Highway and echo through the twisting canyons of Malibu, Calabasas and Agoura Hills."

they live next to a MAJOR highway.  did they expect no noise?  crack down on the cars/trucks first.

there are plenty of offenders of all types but I will go so far as to say, at least here in TX, Squids and Cruisers are equal opportunity offenders.

now, is pissing in your yard also illegal there?  bang head

I draw the line at a law against pissing in your yard! Angry Some things are sacred and you have to stand your ground. Freedom is never free! Grin

The people who pregnant dog about bike noise on the highway next to their house are the same ones who live next to gun ranges and airports and want them shut down. Tongue

You might be under the impression that this law is focusing on the sport bikers? It's probably more aimed at the straight piped cruisers. California needs a better motorcycle lobby.

sounds like it but the budget needs a little bit of juice so I guess this will be the norm.  Angry

And let's not kid ourselves... most "public nuisance" laws are wallet-focused.

My 996 had a Termignoni full-system on it. It was extremely loud. I tried to avoid making a complete spectacle of myself in town.

i'd hardly call PCH a "major" highway... that said,  i'm sure the complaints are more about noise in the residential canyons.

Maine just passed a law saying nothing louder the stock and that is for everyone, cars, trucks, and bikes.

Hell, stock can be louder than "stock," depending on how old the pipes are, and how much use they've seen.

I still consider the highway a major roadway with lots of noise.  Glad I live where there's TONS of land.  Tongue
