Help me choose my next bike
«
on:
September 14, 2010, 02:56:00 PM »
I've been riding a 99 Monster 750 for awhile now but I'm getting ready to upgrade to a newer, bigger and hopefully better Ducati. Right now I'm trying to decide between the Hypermotard (both 796 and 1100 being considered) and 848. Please chime in with your two cents, but no more. Everybody gets two... don't f*#& with me.

The Hyper will get you arrested and a long stay in jail. You're just asking for trouble.
Go with the 848. You'll get in less trouble. Just saying...

Find a good, used HM1100S. Pick up Ca-Cycleworks extended range fuel tank for it. Let the (long range) fun begin.

You just keep trying to unload your scooters. I'm thinking counseling.

Doood, you should ride one. I let one of the guys take mine for a quick spin during last Saturday's ride through southern Maryland. All he could say afterwards was "DAMN", and then later:

between the motard and the 848, I'd have to go with the 848. You asked for two cents but I'll give you more
Most important advice, test ride both, then make up your mind [moto]
In my case (and to each their own), when I decided to get a monster, I went in to test ride the M696 and M1100, but the dealer let me test ride both 848 and HM796 too, for about an hour each. the hypermotard's upright position was easy on my back and wrists, but it didn't feel like a special bike. I can't come up with the right words to explain that feeling, but I just didn't feel good riding it, compared to the monsters. plus, the seat was very uncomfortable for me. my butt starting hurting after 20 minutes riding. the 848 on the other hand felt fantastic. more power, yet easy handling. gave me the feeling I could take on any road. I guess what I'm trying to convey is the difference in riding sensation between a hypermotard and a superbike. found myself undecided between the monster 796 and the 848. In the end I decided to stick with the monster, for budget reasons, and because a monster is a gentler first bike than the 848, so I went ahead and ordered a black monster 796. My next bike will be a superbike, definitely!
Whatever you decide to get, you're going to enjoy it

Well, why limit to Ducati? Lots of nice bikes out there.
Go test ride one of everything that anyone will let you throw a leg over and buy what you like the most.
If it actually matters what I think, then turbo 'busa.

Jesus, this was your first bike and they let you take all these machines out for an hour each? That must have taken some gusto to pull off.

well... I did reassure the dealer that I have a combined 100 hours riding between the license classes, the track riding lessons and the occasional weekend touring on rental bikes. or maybe the dealer was just eager to sell me something...
