Need to have my 15k service done and have been qouted $800 +/-. Is there cheaper in the San Diego/Riverside area or is this the nature of the beast?

Depends on what you have already had done and what needs to be done. If you need a full service i.e. belts and vlaves then that sounds about right.
My 15k involved an oil change and some other things I needed tweeked so it ran me about $150. But I also had a full service done at 12k.
What have you had done so far?

The only thing done recently is changing the spark plugs, fuel and air filter-basic stuff. How much was your service at 12k? I assume about the same.

Yep. It's really the labor that casts so much, from what i understand. Adjusting the valves and changing the belts and timing can be somewhat time consuming.
If there is a bunch you can do yourself it will definitely save you some money. I really don't know much about the valves so I prefer not to mess around with the engine components. And as long as someone is in there doing the valves it's just as easy for me to have them do the belts.

Valve adjustment is not too complicated. The problem is that the shim kits are crazy expensive. ~$300+ |

my 12k was like $600 even but this was a couple years ago with Stu/Flight.
My experience with cars/bikes tells me labor is usually 1/2 the bill unless you're doing something crazy with parts (fuel tank replaced, maybe).

I'm now going through the list of things done for the service and determining whether I can do it or have them. The list is pretty short-pads, filters, plugs... but even if these few things takes off an hour of labor, that's $90 right there.

the big thing is the labor, the time you have to take half the bike apart to get to the shims is annoying you pay someone else to do that work. i know that people say the shims are "easy" to do, and technically it isn't rocket science checking and replacing shims.
the hard part is that it takes time to get to them and then put hte bike back together and such, and that when you pay someone to take 2-4 hours to do a complete service instead of you using your free time outside of work is sometimes worth the money, at least it was for me.
the choice is yours.

Just got bike back after having a streefighter as a loner, but service came out to be $654. Can complain when I was qouted $800. Just doing filters and pads helped out though.
