Valet Key
«

I bought a spare "valet" key blank from my dealer. It has a smaller head. Does not incorporate a transponder.
I need it to access my seat release lock due to restricted access caused by a GIVI rack and Evo Tech tail tidy.
The key cutting has to be done on a milling machine type of cutting system for these new keys.
Cost is out the door crazy to have the key cut. These are the same type of key new Mercedes and Honda Accord cars utilize.
Only one place in my town does this work and man does he ever gouge you!!!!
I'm not so sure it was worth it, but I want the luggage and the tail tidy in place.
$ 150.00 to cut a key
As the saying goes, ya gotta pay to play.

Have you tried a honda dealer? It might be worth a shot.

Isn't a key that opens storage locks but doesn't operate the ignition lock the exact opposite of a valet key?
Obsessive pickiness aside, I'm in much the same boat. From your description of how you have to get the key cut, I'm assuming you have a 696, 796, or 1100.
May I ask how much the non-transponder key was and if you have a part number for it?

for less money you could buy a small servo motor, push button and bracketry and make a push button release for the seat. no key needed.

Yes its an 1100s
I haven't paid for actual key as yet.
I did pay to have it cut though.
Push button idea is neat. Could also cheap fix by just feeding cable end out and pulling it to release latch.

Thanks for the part number - that's extremely helpful!
It looks as if most places charge about $22 for this, which is noticeably less than the transponder version. Since I just want a key I can hang on a lanyard around my neck to use for the fuel cap and panniers on my Multi 1200, this was exactly what I was looking for.
As you point out, I suspect the nasty part is going to be getting it cut. I know there are some places on the internet that will cut a key from a scan or from key codes. Perhaps that would be less than the Benz dealer.

Well, I'm a tech at a honda dealer.......soooooo
I can't promise it will work, but if you sent me the keys, I can have a parts guy cut it for me (he owes me a favor).
And I'll do it for the low low price of........

Here's a picture of the key without a transponder:
Here's a MTS1200 hands-free fob and backup key (which apart from color is identical to a 696/796/1100 key), and the transponder-less key for size comparison:
I paid $25 to get the key cut just down the road from the dealer, where they key blank was about the same amount.
