My '05 620 has a tail chop (which I think makes the bike look much cleaner). In addition, the fender directly over the rear will has also been taken off. I've seen bikes with and without that fender. Someone said I need it to keep road grime and debris from getting into the rear shock. Is that true? If so, are they hard to install? Can't imagine they would be but you never know.

There's mixed opinions on this. The S*R bikes don't come with one and I'm not intending to put one on mine.

Took mine off haven't had a problem with dirt on my rear shock. Only thing is that you get dirt/debris up under teh seat area.

Took mine off two years ago. No complaints, your butt gets wet slightly faster when it rains.

IF you don't want to put one on, but want to protect your shock - get a Shock Sock. They are a wrap around cover that closes with velcro and has elastic at the top and bottom. Bonus, is that it blacks out the ugly safety yellow of the spring.
As noted, not having one means that more road grime and small debris will get kicked up on the back of your engine and under the seat.

My two cents -- if you ride in the rain or wet a substantial portion of the time, it's worth having just to cut down on the amount of cleaning you need to do (and Yuu -- I LIKE the yellow springs!), not so much if you don't. I took the inner fender off the Monster, but left it on the ST2, which I wanted to leave more prepped for all-weather touring.

Ebay. The same one is used for a lot of monsters. 620, 695 - and I think later model 750s.

I've had good luck with maxsalvage: http://myworld.ebay.com/ebaymotors/maxsalvage/. They've got one for an '02 620 right now. Someone more savvy than I could tell for sure if it'll fit for you.
