I have fitted a new aluminium clutch basket and when tightening the 8mm bolts I notice that when fully torqued down there appears a minimal play in the basket , it seem slightly thinner than the old steel basket ?
It is seating properly over the radius on the gear but the radius is fractionally proud so the bolts themselve are proud by about 0.01mm where  they touch the radius , probably some lock washers would make a difference the new basket is thinner , the old steel basket allowed the bolts to lie flush with the radius

should i shim it with washers? or is the tiny less than 0.01mm amount of play normal oK ?

The basket needs to be tight against the gear.

Use regular washers, not lock washers.
Grind or file a flat on them to make them 'D' shaped if you need to.

Make sure they're not going to conflict with the back of the hub.

Shouldn't be an issue, but no need to get all 8 of 'em loctited and tightened up then find out they drag.... Tongue
