Bar end mirror riders-

Howdy folks,

I bought some nice bar-end mirrors, and the manufacturer recommends mounting them "on" the bar-ends rather than using the adapters that mount "in" the bar-ends...

I'm wondering what you folks have experienced.

I don't know if it matters, but I'm using CRGs.

And, if this should have been placed in the "tech" section, I'm sorry... I guess I'm thinking it's more general than technical in nature...

I really do want to hear what you think.

i've used both, they want you to put them on the actual ends of the handle bar as they think that is more secure that way, i have mine that way and it works.

they also have the bar end plugs that have a place for the crg to clamp onto there, they are good if you don't want to redrill the handlebar for the controls, i think they say not to use those only bc its a hassle and its one more thing that can possibly get loose.  i didn't really use it that long as i found that the farther out the mirrors were the more i didn't like them so i moved the controls in 1/2 inch and put hte crg on the "end of the bar" instead and have had it that way for a few years now.

I should have added that mounting the mirrors "on" the bar-ends lets me use the bar-end weights I seem to be fixated on...

I like the adapters.  No messing around with the controls, and they can help prevent damage just in case the bike tips over (first hand experience).

I have CRG lane splitters on my Sport 1000 and I have used their bar end adapters with zero problems. If nothing else it puts the mirrors out a tad bit further and helps with the rearward view. All good stuff!

Maybe your right... putting the mirrors out a touch more can't hurt, and I really really really hate to give up the slightest fraction of handlebar... I like them nice and wide...

I also hate to spend another 40 bucks or so on the adapters...

Has anyone noticed that using adapters makes for a less secure mounting?  I assume CRG wants us to use the bar-ends because it's a more stable mount.

Mine are not 100% as tight on the CRG bar ends as I would really like them but they are tight enough. They don't move around. If you were to bump my lane splitters they would move a little on the factory CRG bar ends but it would take a pretty deliberate bump. Sort of like "Doctor, it hurts when I do this." "Well, don't do that!" kind of thing.

I made my adapters - cost me more than $40 in time, but they were free in my mind.  Know any hobby machinist?  They are super simple to make.

It's kind of funny you should mention that.

I see a bunch of bar-end decorations I thought would make perfect mirror mounts.

I don't have a lathe, though...

But, I was actually considering chucking something up in my drill press and carefully cutting/finishing a "groove" to accommodate the mirrors.

What would you use to cut?

I was thinking a file, and then I'd finish them off with paper...

It has nothing to do with bar end mirrors but I try to keep my pooch away from chili or tex-mex left overs. Much easier on the eyes and olfactory senses. Just sayin'

I use CRGs on RhinoMoto bar end adapters, they're weighted and utilize sliders on the ends. Haven't had a problem with them coming loose, etc.

I can't find how much they weigh or how they secure themselves.

...anyone know?

It's either the expanding rubber sleeve, or it's the metal pieces, adding to the weight, that "force" each other against the inner diameter...

anyone know?
