Slip-ons slipping off

I removed my rearsets for repaint last night and noticed something..... Here is the dilemma.



They slip right off with no resistance. Now I'm no mechanic but I've got a hunch that this isn't exactly what's supposed to happen. Here is the other dilemma...



That bolt is going to be a major PITA. I already tried wrenching on it a bit and it's not making me happy. So, where do I go from here? Any kind of sealant I could use or do I need to work those bolts lose to try and tighten the seal? Thanks to Ducati for giving "slip on" and whole new meaning!

BONUS: on a side note, I would like to understand this creature a little better. This was threaded into the rearset by the rear brake. When the brake is not engaged, there is a screw that touches the tip of this guy. Doesn't look like it moves. Is it a magnetic sensor for the brake light or am I way off?

Can't help much on the exhaust question but the last pic is the switch for your rear brake lever.

It isn't a magnetic though, the little nub at the end of the threads goes in and out when you depress the rear brake lever.

Earlier Monsters did simply slip on and had no clamp, then, around 2002 the clamp appeared.

For the exhaust clamp bolt: try soaking in WD-40 overnight.  THat should help it loosen enough to allow you to properly tighten. 
+1 to what was said about the rear brake: The little nub IS the switch that gets activated by the brake pedal.

A quick search last night brought up high temp copper silicone sealant. Anybody ever try it out?

Earlier Monsters did simply slip on and had no clamp, then, around 2002 the clamp appeared. 

True, but there was an sort of sleeve that sealed it, sort of like a slightly smaller pipe in the header pipe, and the rear exhaust pipes slipped in between the outer and inner header pipe.

Don't use the high temp copper, they have muffle weld/sealant, or even muffler metal tape to wrap around it.

Kroil for your bolt.  If you can't find it, mix ATF and acetone.

The copper silisealant works well.  Pity to have to buy a whole tube for that, but it will do the job.

Try PB Blaster on that bolt...

I sprayed some WD40 on those pregnant doges last night so I will see if it did anything today when I get home. I'm taking a can of PB Blast with me to try that out too. I hate the cans of PB blast though. Too many gaudy advertisements!

We have quite a bit of aluminum shim here at work. Perhaps that would work

WD40 worked like a charm. They both came out fairly easy. So what does everyone or anyone think about using aluminum shims to try to seal it off?

I shimmed one of mine on the S4 Yesterday cut a strip 20mm X 150mm curled it round and it helped a lot  placed it inside .

How thick was the shim you used? I took a quick look last night and it looks like it might be a PITA to get a shim in there. Also, did you locktight the clamp bolt?

I cut a strip of thin aluminium sheet 20mm by 150mm curled it up and it worked I just torqued the bolts up until the clamp was fully closed

I woudl try some copper sealant first before shimming.  Just apply it liberally and then reclamp.  Worst case you leak and then go from there.

Get the pipes expanded.
