Pricy but nice: KTM 690 SMC 2008 - $7000 (Springfield) -
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/mcy/2744688613.html
<snip>
2008 KTM 690 SMC in excellent condition. The best supermoto on the market. Rare bike. Very well taken care of and in excellent shape. This bike pretty much comes with it's own online community at the site supermotojunkies.com and you can see the sale thread there as well search around for the whole bike's history there- it was owned by "hollywood33" then me "zimm". The sale thread is over at: KTM 690 for sale
3 sets of bodywork- white, black, and orange! I bought it with 2,000 miles, it now has approx 5,500 miles. Always garage kept, never raced.
- Wings exhaust, Akrapovic program, Akrapovic carbon heat shields, Black header wrap
- New orange brake rotor and EBC 'HH' Extreme pads
- Powerparts orange bling: rear sprocket, sliders, peg sliders, engine covers, brake/clutch covers
- ASV levers
- G2 throttle tamer
- Euro tail
- Watsen design rear and Rizoma front LED blinkers ($$$)
- Nearly new Distanzia tires
- Fastaway handguards
- New white/black plastics. Also have full set of orange and full set of black plastics
- DOT legal turn signals and tail to bolt on for safety inspections
- Approaching 6000 mile service- have oil, filters, spark plug, and air filter to go with bike
- Box of original parts (KTM briefcase, tool kit, grab handles, passenger pegs, etc)
- Extra gearing (15/16t front, 42, 43 rear)
- Have title in hand
- $7000

Seems that the SMC are really just made to be road burners. Though they share a lot with the Enduro they aren't the exact same bike delivered with different tires. If I'm holding to the delusions of some off the tarmac work, looks like the Enduro is the way to go.
Though I do like me some SuMo

Yeah suspension and brakes at the very least are quite different. Ring up MFI if you are serious about one, they may be able to get you a new one for what some of these folks are asking used.

Ian, when you are ready just call b&e motorsport, talk to Bob.
He will find you a KTM.

Bah, my SMC does fine off road
Santa is bringing a GoPro so I'll prove it once I get it and I get a day that is decent enough to bring it on a trail that doesn't have feet of snow on it by then
That big front brake is really friggen touchy though, I just stay away from it totally on the dirt.

It's a KTM shop out near Annapolis I think.

After a bit of research... yeah the asking prices are high. The SMC RETAIL KBB is about $6k, trade is just a bit more than $4k. There's some nice bits and extras - but a grand over KBB retail is a bit unrealistic for a personal sale.... But it is local to me
The Enduro is a bit more on point, but still high. We'll see. Gotta a couple weeks of down time before I could do anything anyway.

Any notions of the maintenance schedules on these orange devils?

It really depends on the model. In general I think the RFS (racing four stroke) engines are the most maintenance intensive, so I would avoid them unless you want a race bike to trailer around. Other bikes had some teething issues that were later solved E.G. water pump on the 950 and some others.
I think the only real horror stories come from bikes that had a specific issue that wasn't dealt with properly. But I see plenty of people on advrider.com with high mileage KTMs that just keep riding the piss out of them. Once you pass the 50k miles mark you'll want to pay more attention to symptoms your bike might show, and an engine rebuild
*might*
not be far away. This is really important if you plan on a long trip to the middle of nowhere, far away from civilization. Not a such a big deal for weekend rides.
