the headlight shroud is pretty simple. two bolts on the lower triple, slide it up, remove all the cables, computer, lights etc.

Yeah, it wasn't bad, but it did seem like there were a lot of things to disconnect, bolts to remove in order to get the headlight shroud off. In comparison, my other bike has a total of 3 bolts.
Regarding getting down to bare metal. Moschy, you had to do that yourself? the shop doing mine is sandblasting as part of the powdercoating service.

I#m not the biggest fan of sandblasting. It can change the texture of the metal. But I just did the headlight shroud. Footpegs were sandblasted.

OK, I've got all my parts back, in black. I've put most of the bike back together, but am having a little trouble with the rear brake pedal. ...specifically getting the spring in the right place. I'm just not sure where the spring should actually be. I should have taken more photos of it before taking it apart.
I'm wondering if anyone would be willing to shoot a quick photo or 2 and post, of where the spring is on the bike when the assembly is together and working? thanks!

The non-attached end of the spring goes over the bolt'y thingy which connects the brake master push rod to the break lever/pedal - it has an extra shoulder/groove/recess, I think (?).
EDIT: that is, of course, if the 696 looks like the S*R (didn't notice that before I posted)

No one? I'm lost. I feel really dumb. Everything is back together except this darn right side/rear brake lever. I just don't see any good place for this spring to go.

The place for it is shown on the parts catalogue.
Not very clear, but it may help...

yeah, I got it now. Well, I think I got it!
Everything seems to be working correctly. What a pain in the butt that rear brake set up is. All the black looks great though! Wish I could go ride today.

Good that you solved it
Maybe swing by a dealer and have them check it.
If the spring suddenly jumps out of position, it might surprise and disturb you.

about to send my brackets off to powdercoat as well, has anyone had any luck pressing out the larger bushings? I can see the metal ring from the outside that im sure is used to press them in, but I am worried about destroying them by trying to press just the rubber from the other side.
Moschy, when you did the paint removal on the headlight bracket what did you use? some sort of chemical stripper or did you just sand it down?

Yes, all of my bushings came out and went back in. No need to replace any of them. I got most of them out, but the powdercoating shop got the large ones out for me. I've also been told since that they probably would not have melted had they gone in. I don't know.

Getting the lamp shroud off was a 30 min job. The hardest was to get the silver coating off. The guy who did the coating job for me said it had to be bare metal.
if the chrome was in good condition (no flaking at all) you can PC right over it after a soft glass bead blasting to give it some texture.
