Well if this is the case, If you buy a motorcycle from Tassie you'll know that top gear won't be worn out.
That will suck the big one!

Rural roads near my place have been 90km/h for a while now.
My top gear still gets used...

Road safety statistics show a 10 to 20 per cent reduction in the speed limits in rural roads in Tasmania could prevent four fatalities and 13 serious injuries a year.
Wait a bit... they're saying that road safety statistics show this?!? I'd be interested in what data they're showing.
I reckon that statistically speaking, this is utter bullshit. What sort of numb nuts believes this crap? We've already got far too many people falling asleep at the wheel from sheer boredom - imagine what a further reduction in speed would do!

There seems to be another bullshit story to add to the pile.
Though it has been on trial in Tasmania's rural roads, you kinda gotta go far in most of the rest of our populated cities to get to rural roads. I mean Sydney's urban sprawl covers 70+k's and even then it still goes on.
Weren't we getting front number plates a while back

C'mon people think about this rationally. The trial has been successful for one simple reason ... drivers have been
more
attentive.
How could that be possible you ask?
Well no doubt the drivers in these rural communities are travelling at the same speeds they have done forever ... but now they have to remain more alert because they know they are speeding ... and getting caught is only a matter of time
No wonder though that people think Tasmanians are a bit slow (hey, its not my stereotype) ... thinking up such a new and inventive way to reduce the road toll - reducing speed limits. How come nobody has thought of that before?
From our brief break in Tassie earlier this year it seemed they were relatively relaxed on speed enforcement ... dare I say, perhaps using a bit of common sense. With that in mind I think they actually have a real opportunity to do something truly innovative down there to reduce the road toll ... by encouraging people to learn to drive PROPERLY rather than whatever the hell it is they are trying to do.

Bloody lazy politicians! This will only make it easier to ping people for speeding. Personally I think there is too much public opposition for this to go through.
The same as Dave, I have also ridden in the trial area around Kingston over 90. In some places they still have the 100 signs so I assume thats the limit. On some of our roads its not possible to speed due to corners or condition of the road but there are plenty where 100 or even 110 is fine.
If this keeps up the pollies will realise we can reduce the road toll to zero if we just walked everywhere. Tossers

In a completely unrelated discussion with a mate recently I simply stated 'it is all about perception' ... he paraphrased with ultimate clarity 'one person's perception is their own reality'.
This is just another example of people seeing what they want to see and believing what they want to believe.
In reality lowering the speed limit by 10-or-whatever km/h won't stop people from speeding. Those that are most likely to be involved in (read: cause) an 'incident' will not all of a sudden change their thinking or approach on the road ... in all likelihood, they were already speeding with the old limit and will continue to with any lowering limit. Just the fine will now be greater if they get caught.

I agree with what you are saying Mark, but does that mean that those who were not speeding and not paying attention (to their speed) will now be speeding?
I know in my little town of Appin we are now a 50 kph township and yet as I come out of my street onto the main road and head into town I check my speed and yes, I'm doing 60 kph, I will have to re-programe my self.
So how can we be seen to reduce the road toll and at the same time boost the coffers of the state?
Lets reduce the speed limit, too easy.

Just like the Picton Rd aye Mick which is now 90 due to being one of the most dangerous roads in NSW. Personally The road is fine I think the issues are that people take too many risks.
Now we have boring 90kph

just like the national park which is currently 60kmh. used to be 80, and if it still was 80 i would still have my licence!!
i dont believe the reduction in posted speedlimit has slowed that many ppl down.. possibly just made more ppl run for their licence as opposed to pulling up when they know they have been pinged.
