2009 M696 - when i switched out my ecu for the racing ecu, the instrument cluster displayed the mileage on the bike
(in kilometers
of course, but that is another issue).

I thought by switching ECUs, all data would be lost.  Where is the memory located?  Is there a memory chip in the instrument cluster?  Where does it draw its power from since the data remains after a battery disconnect?  Is it like a 'flash memory'?

Curious minds want to learn?

Dunno what kind of memory it is, but yes, the cluster remembers the mileage, even without power.
