Argh, had the bike 1 week now and having trouble with leaking battery breather tube and probably overcharging system (should be sorted under warranty) but now cannot get the bike to idle for more than 1 minute now and bike is popping and struggling to run then it dies, feels like it is not getting fuel. Thought it could have been super low on fuel and I have added 5l fresh fuel, no change, fuel lines seem clear from any kinks.

Have not ridden it since takin tank back and playing around taking photos of the battery leak for the dealer where I have warranty as the batt acid leaked down frame and engine covers..

Obviously need to get bike running to ride to dealers..

99 model 900 monster ( carbs )

Anyone with any ideas of where to start looking first. I have good hackyard skills but time pressed and hope this sounds familiar with soemone...

bypass filters first?

If it still has the vacuum operated petcock, that's a likely suspect.

+1 and the fuel filter and fuel pump. Test the pump and petcock by by passing them.

If the filter looks like it was not recently changed, then replace it. You can test it by removing it and seeing if it passes fuel via a hose and small funnel. Some filters are see through enough see if they are clogged with crud.

Some tanks on bikes that have been laying around will shed a layer of rust once disturbed and go through a few filters untill the tank is cleaned out. Your local bike shop may have a cleaning product for it.

Was it running before you "removed the tank"?
