I have a 2001 monster 748 and the seat is starting to rip and tear. Everywhere i look the seat is like $250. HOLY COW!!!! if anybody knows where i can get a good/inexpensive seat i would like to know thanks.

$ 250 is close to a new seat, I think.
Used will be less if you can find one.
I'm not sure, but if I'm right and the seats changed over the years - look for an older type seat.

Some patience, $ 70 and a staple gun will make you able to change the cover yourself....

stock seat used should be $100-ish i would think
for $250, you should get the Ducati Performance Touring seat....its better than stock

Maybe.  I have one of the new ones without the gel and it has a few flaws.  It does locate you nicely fore-aft, but I'm not sure if it is more comfortable (have not spent more than a couple hours on it since the change).  The suede-like surface is grippy (not easy to slide a cheek off), but a little loose on the foam.  I've ridden the bike less than a dozen times with the new seat and one of the seams is coming undone.  If you have a tail chop that uses the two mounting points at the back of the frame (where the seat lock assembly mounts) you will have to cut the bosses that the new seat has in that location.  Probably would not buy one again, and spend a lot less money to modify the stock seat instead.

What about getting your current seat re-done/upholstered?  I've seen this link posted on another cycle forum I am on and others have mentioned that they do good work.

True, but it adds confusion though, as there's also a 748ss. You don't realy refer to the 900ss as the 904ss, right?

On eBay, look for pinwall cycle parts, they have two seats that are around $50 plus shipping. They regularly have monsters that they break down and part out.

I'm really happy with my HTMoto seat.  In fact, the one on their page is mine.

I like that every panel can be a different color and material, including the stitching.  My only suggestion, were I to do it again, I wouldn't get the non-slip material where I did.  It's a little too grippy when I'm wearing jeans or dickies.  Not sure how it'd be with leathers.

News from HydroTurf.....

They now offer a choice of stitching. I was hesitant about the bulky seam between A and B - just under the Ischium/sitting bones (the area with the heaviest pressure). The stitching you can see between B and C, french stitching, is now available as an option for the A/B seam. It should improve things, but I'd still prefer no stitches - so, I asked for A and B to be one piece, but didn't get an answer - which probably means "no".

Privateer: have you ever felt the A/B seam?
              I was thinking "carbon" on both A and B - good idea?

I just went out and tested it.  That seam is about an inch outboard from my 'sit bones' on both sides.  I never really noticed where the seam landed so I can't say it's ever been a problem.  I thought the non-slip would be a good idea to keep me from sliding forward.  What it ends up doing is gripping my pants while my body slides inside.  In snugly fitting leathers, probably not a problem.

as for the fabric and pattern... since mine was the first one they'd done, they didn't have a pattern.  I picked the stitching and fabrics, based on the advice from my local shop.  What I got is what they decided on.  On mine, A D and E are non-slip and B and C are carbon.
