Modulating headlight anyone?
«
on:
January 13, 2011, 05:07:34 AM »
HeMan mentioned a "modulating headlight" in the previous post. I have never heard of them and am wondering if anyone uses one. Didn't want to dump on the post and they sound interesting for blind cages?
Found this for info <

I didn't know they actually made those, but it sounds like one of the most obnoxious things ever.

Yes it does, but then maybe obnoxious is good when most people are programmed to not see a bike?
I personally like annoying people, and my wife says I am good at it!

No? huh...
They are not really obnoxious, it just cycles you light between low and high beam. I've only ever seen it on a single lamp bike (like a Monster) and it does make the bike more noticeable.

You guys have never seen these? I'm pretty sure if you own a BMW and buy one of those neon green jackets you get one free.

Muskrat : (Why aren't you working Monday?) That is awful scary searching Goldwing, BMW, and Cruisers forums for information. The least expensive one I found was this one. But I don't know about throwing 80 bucks at it to see how it works. I did notice that everyone that had one said more or less they would not ride with out one. I want to ask them "But what if it breaks". Yea, I just decided to try one.

dude i think this is not good for driving ur bike .. dont get me wrong.. but i think a lot of drivers would think you are flashing them to go ahead.. like if you were letting them out of a side road...

I'm ok with semi loud exhaust, I'm usually trying to move faster than traffic so they only have to put up with it for the duration where they could possibly cause me harm.
These things, however, are a distraction no matter how well seen they get you. I'm assuming you can turn them off, yes? I'm a monkey, I see something shiny like that and I'm likely to drive off the road

Modulating the low beam would be a lot less obnoxious.

I could see where the flashing could be misinterpreted, but I'd have to agree that the flashing makes you more visible. You can spot a goldwing or ultraglide miles away on the interstate at night when they have one of these.
I'd prefer a version that left my main beam untouched and modulated some other light source (admittedly, the Monster is short on forward-facing light sources... hi, lo, turn signals, that's all). It's tough enough riding at night with a steady beam and I don't know if I'd like to embrace the challenge of a constantly shifting view.
Maybe I'll get ambitious this winter and wire up some small, clear LEDs alongside my headlamp. Homemade, ghetto-ass marker lights on a flasher switch.

Most of the ones that I've seen are no where near that obnoxious and yes they do increase your visibility significantly.

U could probably wire up a stronger bulb for ur parking light that was a different color and modulate that. it would look like a beacon, the only issue would be having it intense enough that the main light wouldnt drown it out.
