Looking to find out the title "status" on this bike. Deal is good but something isn't right. Need to check it out before I proceed.

At the courthouse I could but I'm long gone from there. Had all sorts of CSI type abilities. Can you look into Carfax info?

Jumping in here, I'm looking at another 999 here in Atlanta. Guy has no title, but has given me the VIN.
NCIS online says it's clean
, the shop he bought it from a few months ago says it's clean.
Guy has apparently fallen on hard times, but the amount of "stories" are quite long....house fire, lost ID, blah blah blah. I need to do the same with GA DMV to see about how to title it.
Never mind. Seems you already checked it.

I guess it was registered in GA. If it was recently taken, I dunno if it would be in NCIS already. Is there a State CIS or something like that?

Have you called your local police? They should look it up for you.

If it was reported stolen it would be in NCIS in a matter of hours.

Key word is "reported". If someone doesn't know it's gone yet, it won't get reported. Make sure the name of the seller matches the name of the registered owner.

It would only be in NCIS's database if it belonged to a Navy/Marine service member or dependant, or stolen from base.
Where the information would be is called
NCIC
. NCIC is where all local, state, and federal departments upload their "information" so it's nationally available to other depts.
I know this as I used to actually manage the NCIC entries for NCIS. As far as asking someone to run a random VIN through it for your own personal gain, it is highly illegal. I suggest you remove any positive responses to anyone actually running it for you.

Doh! I copied his error into my own post. I've been watching too much TV again....

Running a VIN to make sure a vehicle is not stolen is not "for personal gain."

I would argue it is if you're running it as a favor to a friend. Not for your personal gain. But, for his. Now, if it were to be run because it was actually suspected of being stolen, that would be on the right track. Not that it matters, I know the NCIC gets used for it all the time.

Again, call your local police. They will run it for you. I did this just a few days ago.

Your argument would be on track only if he was asking for personal info (name, address, etc) of the registered owner. Checking to see if a vehicle is stolen is not personal gain, it's in the interest of the State and the actual registered owner if it is stolen. He is also asking in good faith to avoid the possibility of purchasing stolen property. I have to get re certified every year. I know what info I can and cannot give out.
