Hi guys. I just got myself a 2003 Ducati Monster 1000ie and have a few questions about where everyone gets parts. It has about 29k on the clock and was gonna do the 30k service myself.

What is a decent oil to use? I was thinking a Motul synthetic but in the oil change vid that is posted in the tech section the user says not to use Motul.

Are these filters ok? K&N KN153 for $21.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270686560167&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:AU:1123

Are these the correct spark plugs? NGK DCPR8E. I will need 4 of them since my engine is a DS. I can get these for $3.95 ea online.

Here is a pic of her

the users comment about not using motul is only a personal preferance, plenty of us use it with no worries, though i use shell VSX4 or castrol power1. not sure if your plug number is correct, check your owners handbook it will list the part number. I always use genuine oil filters, K&N make cotton type air filters and they're excellent but i'd wager they re name a popular aftermarket brand like fram for their oil filters, although i could be wrong.
Did you get the red key? did you get the service book? did you get receipts for work done? check how long since the belts have been done, most, including me, suggest doing a full service on a 2nd hand bike regardless of what you have been told by the seller.
If you're confident you can check the clearances and change the shims if necessary and the belts then go for it, brad black can supply you everything you need. if you're not mechanically minded enough to know how to check the clearances and cam belts you could do the fluids/filters/plugs and get the other stuff done at a workshop.

Welcome along, I think I have seen you post on the general board or somewhere in acc & mods.

I have used Motul when I did mid life changes and have never had problems with it.
Can't answer your spark question sorry.
I have always had K&N oil filters and also never had problems. They are easier to use with the built in socket on the bottom.

There is the mechanics thread that can help you find someone to work on your bike if you need.
Do drop into the intro thread and tell us a bit more about you.

cheers
Matty...

Hi Twisty
Good bike that's my preferred weapon of choice. waytogo
That NGK DCPR8E is the correct plug.
Looks like the previous owner wanted to sell it rather than pay for a 30k service.
As Loony said did you get the books and service history? and the dreaded read key very important.
If not as per Loony  said give it a good once over belts etc
Oil use any premium brand oil recomended for your bike, i am using Fuchs 10/40 semi synth basically that's all my local bike shop /repairer carries
And buy all the other consumables there as well plugs/ filters.
At 30k service
The valve clearance will need checking and unless your very good on the spanners best to get the mechanics to do that.
Check your brake pads /change the fluid.
Check the timing belts.
Check the oil filter screen on the right side of the sump it has the oil temp sender attached you will need a big socket can't remember the size!
and fork oil when was that changed?
Fuel filter about $40 in side the fuel tank
Air filter

That will keep you busy for a few days Grin

Hi guys, thanks for the reply.

I have the red key, a spare key and little code card thingy. I also have the service book and it seems up to date but there is no info on what was done although the PO assured me the belts were done at 20k service. I could ring the shop that is in the book to confirm. It was purchased from an older guy who sold it due to lack of use and arthritis catching up with him. The previous owner before him was James Courtney (V8 supercar champ) who had to sell it for contractual reasons. Has his name on delivery receipt and service records.

I might give the bike shop in the service book a ring to see if they have any record of belts being done. If not I will do the oil, plugs and filters myself and buy some belts from Brad Black as mentioned and let the mechanic do that and valve check.

I am in the Brissy area and have heard a lot of mixed reviews as to regards Ducati mechanics. Does anyone have any experience with a guy called Ozzy Graf of Oz-Racing Mechanical & Engineering? He bought a heap of gear from Bevan at Eurotwins when he sold up.

Cheers

unless he bought bevs know how as well i can reccomend alex at LAE Racing 38656122, or noel watson of duke specialty services 0406 218 505 both are very, very good and that's no disrespect to ozzy cause i don't have any experience with him, i save that for the stea.......err, dealers up this way. if you must use a dealer daryl at gold coast ducati is good, not sure what sort of bill you may get though, otherwise it's noosa or byron bay.

I have to intro twice? I have already posted in the introduce yourself section of the forums. Forgive my lack of forum etiquette, still working it all out.

Not all of us pop over to that part of the forum, and anyway this is closer to home and its a wee bit more personal, thats why we have intro's stickied to the top of our page.

And welcome Dave.
