It's cheating if you motor pace!! laughingdp I've caught some big numbers coming down "the wall" on 2222 in Austin coming back from a 620 lake loop. Of course that was back in the 70s. You would be killed now by traffic trying that loop ride today. Sad. Very sad.

You realize that Austin became a great cycling capital because of John Howard. He was the Captain of the '72 Munich and '76 Montreal Summer Olympic cycling team and a God in the early days of USCF. Anyone remember the American Bicycle League? Hmmm, I thought not. It was the low key predecessor of the USCF. There I go dating myself again. Tongue John and his wife Kim moved to Austin and lured the other Olympic team members with them to train. Flat to the east for speed work and motor pacing and hilly to the west and south for climbing work. Used to ride bikes to stay in shape for MX. Worked at a bicycle shop during college. Met Howard and the others. Talked me into bicycle racing. Sold my Honda Elsinore 125 and 250. Became TX State road race champ and road in three National Championships (by the way I sucked at all three!!) even qualified for the 1980 Olympic Trials. With binoculars you could have seen the front break on a clear day. I sucked but it was fun. Those high speed downhill runs are pretty cool.

Except for the friend who one day rolled a badly glued on tubular on that same 2222 downhill. He lost about three square yards of skin! Too bad bike racers don't wear Dainese!!! waytogo Oops, I digress. Again. Tongue What a shock. laughingdp bang head Everything is better on two wheels!

Just a nice 1/4mile flat to decline then a big downhill.  Rode out near Mt View (Loop 12 & Keeneland)

I had to look up what motor pacing was   laughingdp

The derny (motor paced indoor velodrome) races almost killed Merckx in '69. Very very dangerous velodrome motorpaced racing. Damn near ended his amazing career. Without a doubt the most incredible bike racer of all time. Screw Armstrong you yahoos! Even Lance says Eddie was the best of all time, ever!! And he and Eddie are very good friends. Don't take it from me. Just look at what he did and how he crushed the competition. I screwed up and missed the honor of a life time when he came to Austin during the old Tour of Texas days. Damn! Like missing having lunch with Rossi.

OK, I know this is not scooter stuff, but it is still two wheels and this is the say anything thread. Too me Eddie is the Ago of bicycle racing. That says it all!

Lance shmance. Go for the Eddie or Bernard sig and pic. Those other guys are wankers in comparison!!! Maybe not Hincappie. He is also awesome. He has never ever reached the level of success he is capable of. He paled in the shadow of Lance and unjustifiably so. It was not fair to him. He is an awesome racer, who if he was captain of a team, he too would of have Armstrong like results. Lance would have never had the results he had if it were not for the stellar support of George and others. Such is the nature of world class cycling. The same was true for Merckx in the 70s. Nothing has truly changed.... sadly, especially the doping problem. The spirit of Tommy Simpson lives on. If I date you on that one then Google him. Tongue
