Mountain bike shorts are different from road shorts. Some even look like regular, loose fitting cargo type shorts but they have a inner vented padded short inside that you can't see. Does that make sense? The jerseys are basically the same for road and off road. Some folks still wear road shorts on mountain bikes but some mountain bikers look down on them. Weird but true. I have never worn my mountain bike shorts while riding my road bikes but I am sure it's do-able. Why not?

I also believe that they make a padded, vented inner short that you wear under your regular everyday hiking type shorts. Kind of like a padded Under Armour compression short. Sort of the same set up as the above described mountain bike short but a seperate inner short not attached like the MB short.

More importantly why does one where those funny small clothes. Please explain Fastwin/ Ronr. I do know but I am sure you two could explain it more comprehensively.

Say Anything, right?  Well...

I'm driving home today and I pass a lone bicycle rider.  He's huffing along at a pretty good clip in "the bike lane" on a very narrow-tire bicycle, probably a racing bike of some kind.  But someone please answer me this:

Isn't there something out there besides spandex/euro-racing outfits people can buy for riding clothes?  Something like, I don't know, ANYTHING without spandex?!?! 

I know I shouldn't be so critical, but seriously, doesn't Columbia or L.L. Bean make a light weight alternative for bicycling that people like me wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen in? 

Chaffing... i don't care if I look ridiculous in my road bicycling gear, but comfort over-rules appearances on a bicycle.  Try riding on a saddle that is the size of your, for a lack of a better word, taint for 3+ hours.  Padding in key areas is essential for any extended ride on a bicycle.

Hey, modern day riding apparel is awesome. You have no idea what I had to ride with in the 70s when I raced. It was archaic! We'd stuff pages of newspapers up the front of our wool jerseys to block cold wind during the winter training rides! In races here and in Europe fans would stand at the top of climbs and hand pages of newspaper to the riders as they began the hilly/mountain descent for them to stuff up under their jerseys. Hell, I think I still have frostbite from some of those training rides and races! No wonder I don't like riding scooters this time of year!! Been there done that.

I have to hand it to all you guys and girls who ride and race. Seriously, the dedication and commitment needed to perform at this is one of the most admiralble endevours one can undertake and my hat is off to you all.
I tried the Mtn bike route back in the mid-'80's with a (then) new Diamondback top o the line bike. I rode (and still ride) the spokes off it as much as I could. But I never could keep up with the roadies so I stayed on the trails.

there are many forums out there to post on.  I have really good friends (outside of my roomies) that wont post here anymore.  Maybe they wanted a change.  Maybe they want to be able to post something and not worry about PMs being passed around talking about that person and whether or not they should be banned.  Maybe they want to post something and not worry about feeling guilty because someone deleted their account.  Maybe they don't want to be controlled by Moderators.  Maybe they want to be able to say anything in a say anything thread.  Or talk politics in a political thread. Me personally, I love this forum and I'm gonna keep adding to it, but I'm not gonna wonder why Brian reads RC51 forums or BF reads vette forums.....

This is more of what I'm not inclined to say is promoting good riding habits. There's a reason I'm an older rider.

So is Rossi a squid?  He rides a Yamaha and rides a wheelie after his races, and have you seen video of him on the street, or on scooters?

Call the guy in the video what you will, but it looks to me like he has better bike control than 90% of the people that read this forum.  Has anyone ridden with some of the faster people on this forum?  I'm not talking about just being on the ride, I mean being upfront and watching some of the speeds, passes, etc... that go on?(I'm also talking about myself )  I've ridden wih a few people on here and thought to myself......I better slow down a lil in this traffic.  And FYI, that's bad if that's coming from me on the I-state.

Believe me, the transition from non-spandex wearer to "plum-smuggler" was an embarrassing stage in my development as a cyclist.  (how you doin? )  It really comes down to a matter of comfort. Keep in mind that a cyclist usually pedals at a cadence of 80-100 RPM. Counting both the up and down pedal strokes, that equates to 160-200 times every minute that the inner thighs are rubbing. You want to have as little fabric getting in the way as possible and spandex happens to be the best way to achieve this. Road cyclists are in a static position most of the time compared to Mt. Bikers who can move around a lot and aren't in the saddle for extended periods like the "roadies", so they can get away with more fabric (most mt biking shorts do have some sort of spandex compression layer built in to prevent chafing.).

Hope this clears things up. Some people are just not meant to wear spandex and it can be a shocking thing for sure. I suggest you look up pictures of pro cyclists or maybe check out the Tour of California starting Saturday to see examples of proper spandex physique. That might help.

heh, yeah... i'm still training to be able to keep up with you guys.  i've only managed to log 35 miles since i got the nike + setup, but i've changed up shoes as of a few days ago, and i'm hoping that helps out my knee.  i definitely want to try it out in the near future though.

can't promise i'll be naked, though i may have to go shirtless if it's too hot out.  i don't deal well with the texas heat.
