2006 S2R1000

« on: January 30, 2011, 03:55:58 PM »

I was recently at Fast by Ferracci to see what they could do for my 06 S2R1000. I told them I installed a full exhaust system and DP ECU. They told me that their full programmable ECU ($1300 installed and programmed) would get me another 10+hp. Has anyone had any experience with this or other programmable ECUs like Nemesis. I thought that was what I was getting when I bought the DP ECU.

Unless you're going to do some internal engine mods or do away with the airbox altogether, a DP ECU is all you need.
Spend the $1300 on other bling.

By the way DP ECU's are not fully progammable like the Nemesis and the Ferracci ECU. (that's where the xtra $$  comes into it)

10+ Hp from an ECU swap sounds far fetched for me. Especially if you already have a DP ECU, and especially if its an S2R1000.

I thought that the DP ECU/ reflash would net 7ish HP. Thats with the exhaust and filter. I'd find it hard to believe that you would get another 10+. If thats the case, then the Nemesis / FBF would get you 17 to 20 more HP from stock for $1300. That sounds too good to be true. My stock S2R 1K has about 80HP and If I could get close to 100HP for $1300 I'd do it in a heart beat. To get those kind of numbers, I've been told you need to go with the big bore kit and possibly cams.

I thought 10hp was a bit optimistic. My S2R is pushing about 85hp on the dyno with my current mods. Ferracci also suggested an 1100 big bore kit but they definately said the ECU would get me the 10hp. Big bore kit and ECU for a mere $3000. I'd rather pick up a used S4RS

I'm dealing with the same demons. At some point you have to determine just how far you want to go. I plan on keeping my S2R until it has to go to the junk yard. I do plan on a big bore kit, and will most likely do the work myself. I also want something with more gusto, and will look at the new Multistrada. Some may say just buy a bigger bike. Yep I could do that. But that would be the easy way out.

Bike sold - But I'm still lurking.

FYI, I live close to and have worked with ferracci many times. him and his people are excellent at selling their products.

With the s2r they tried to sell me the exact same thing. I told them "I got a reflashed ecu from desmoporsche for $300" and boy, did they not like that. When I needed to have the tps and idle adjusted due to the reflashed ecu, they tried convincing me that "a dyno tune was necessary to do this."

I later found out that ferracci gets his ecu's through desmoporsche which is probably why he was pissed, I cut out the middleman...

Did you get a less than friendly vibe from them while in the shop?

Actually the day I went in it was snowing like crazy so I was the only one in there. I spoke to the service mgr about some mods to my bike. He went and got Mr. Ferracci who had installed and tuned a new ECU for another S2R1k. He told me the ECU would give me another 10hp but the best option was to install the 1100 big bore kit with the ECU for $3000 and get me to around 100hp.
The way I look at it is I'd be into this bike for $9k and I could get into a used s4rs for around the same money and its 120hp out of the box.

Yea... But that S4RS has four valves (double the adjustment/maintenance cost) and is water-cooled (ugly radiator).

Sounds to me like he really wanted to sell you "his" ECU. I'm pretty sure the one you have will work fine. You may have to have it re-flashed. As far as the big bore kit goes, if you have your cylinders worked and just buy pistons, you can probably get it done for around $1K. I plan on doing this (hopefully) soon. My tech says he can sell me "his" pistons.(He and a friend have them made). Then all I have to do is get my cylinders worked or buy some replacements. Have them coated. He said he will fit the rings and reassemble. I get to save money by doing the tear down and reassemble then have him do the final tweeking. I still think it will be some what difficult/expensive to get to the 100hp range with S2R1K. If you search the posts here, you'll see people who have spent big $ to achieve this. Well spent in my opinion, but not everyones cup of tea.

I think you should just get the cams degreed and make sure the valves are adjusted and everything's right with the fueling and leave it alone. Maybe get a lightened flywheel or something to make things more exciting for you. Spending $3k on engine mods for a 2V, if you're not going racing, is a diminished return. $3k for +15HP(85 to 100) that's about $200 per HP. Save your money for a Desmoquattro if you need the power that badly.

I agree. I'm not looking for miracles out of that engine, just a little more. I've already done the lightened flywheel, had the DP ECU installed and tuned on a dyno but it only has so much adjustability. The tuner said the only other oprtion is to get a PC which they don't make for my bike. That's what originally brought me to Ferracci in the first place because I was told that they had a PC that would work. However, I hesitate to start doing major engine work. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.

I went with a Microtech. The DP ECU can only be tuned a little bit. That's why it still needs a PC to properly tune it.

Just my biased opinion. Smiley

An S2R1K with an 1100 hi-comp pistons, DP cams, some porting and intake mods would be an awesome bike. In OZ they cost the same as S4Rs models as they have the old air cooled classic Monster look but with a SSS and DS motor.

I think 100hp is achievable. 100 hp with 2 valve grunt is as good a real world bike as water cooled 4 valve 120hp. Not as good on the track, but in the hills..

I think that there is something more desirable about that then a water cooled 4 valver, if you are into the simplicity of air cooled 2 valvers. Cool
