I can't wait until Marquez gets on his level and makes Jorge trip on his tampon string.

Well, the other machine is still offline.  Thank god I don't have anything hot lined up for it other than a small job for another DMF'er.

Failed Z axis drive.  It has a regenerative circuit in it so that as the axis rapids into position and then slows to a stop, the current back flows and gets turned into heat.  That's the portion of the drive that lost its smoke.

Good news, Mitsubishi had another one on the shelf.

Bad news, $6500

Better news, they can repair mine for $1800

Even better news, I found a place in Philly that does this sort of repair work in the hundreds of dollars range and I'm waiting for a quote.

The only thing that scares me about old machines (this one's from 1989) is that parts can sometimes be hard to fine.

Otherwise it's all kittens and rainbows when they run.

I had a pretty good day at an auction.

The deal king left his mark. Other bidders scurried off to whine tales of their loss.

What did you find?

Safety clean heated parts washer
About 8 different workbenches, 7 steel, one wood
A heavy gauge steel cabinet (like 1/8 plate)

For $566 (that's with an 18.1% buyers buyers premium)

One of the steel workbenches is made from square channel and plate. I got it for $10. I couldn't even sit down to think up a design without it costing me that in time.

That steel workbench is worth more as scrap than you paid for it.  Nice score  [thumbsup]

It's like I keep saying:  Those who would sacrifice a free range session for a giant beer, deserve neither free range time nor a giant beer.

I moved it all yesterday. I had the truck bed, inside the truck and an 18 foot trailer full to the brim. Also made a deal onsite for a small band saw that nobody bid on :)

Good god.

Another machine down.  One small prox switch has failed and it's rendered the whole machine useless.

It's the switch that tells the machine the drive coupling for the live tools has retracted and it's ok to index the turret.  With a dead switch the machine thinks it's still using a live tool and won't index.

That means I can't even run a 2 axis turn job with it [laugh]  We're half way through taking things apart.  Of course it's easy to see the switch, i mean, it's right there.  But the wiring goes back through the turret, into a black hole that exits in Mordor where it finally winds it's way through the hallways and ends up on TOB.

And the lead is zip tied to everything possible along the way :D

Im glad I have 2 spare switches.  Since we're in there, I'm doing them both because it's a pain in the ass to open it all back up.

The joys of shop ownership.

Not entirely ;)

Worked on this machine all day with probably another four hours to go. I'm pretty sure this machine is Japans slow methodical revenge for the atom bombs.

In three minutes I can uncover the switch and test it. Is like another seven hours to get it out :o

Were at least in the reassembly phase.
