 I know what you mean.
We have to allow for thermal displacement. Or, run the parts on the high limit so that they will be right after they cool off. It can be a real PITA.

Our certifications require less than 50 bad parts per million.
Anything more and we're out of business.

What if you only make 40 bad parts per million, do they penalize you for not making your quota of 50?

Most of our parts are "just in time" to assembly plants.
Bad parts cost us "line down" fees of up to $10,000 an hour, Among other things.

We really didn't have a choice. For many years we shipped from stock to warehouses and distribution facilities. Then our biggest customers decided to stop stocking parts. They devoted all of thier floor space to assembly and we supply on an as needed basis. We try to stock as much as we can, but it's easy to get stuck with obsolete parts that you can't sell.
As a general rule we only have 24 hrs notice as to what has to go out.

When I worked at the fab shop it was similar...except the 'parts' were machines 26' long and several tons of steel.

Made for interesting life schedules.

The time I never worked at a Machine shop, I tied a piece of orange flagging to the fence behind me to use a s a backsight. When I walked down the hill and across the gulch to set up the Total station, I looked back for the backsight, only to discover that the Goats had eaten it right off the fence.

True story....

I think we took a plumbob shot on that one. The angle closed within 15 seconds...

I've been analyzing Texas Metes and Bounds property descriptions for the last several years.  I've seen errors of closure of half a mile.  The Egyptians did a better job of surveying.  I'd say on average, about 70% of the official surveys have gross errors of closure.  Unbelieveable - 15 seconds closure - I wish!  Good Job!

Well that's 15 seconds per shot. It was probably better than that but anything over 15 seconds is no good and gets done over.
