Good lord, man, there's priorities and then there's PRIORITIES!
How can you stand it?
Honestly, the lack of a "warm" place to work on my bike in the winter has taken a huge toll on working on/modding my bike. And in the summer, I just want to ride when time allows.
I should probably build a heated garage

So in 2018 I guy I know made a business introduction for me that resulted in a substantial amount of business. I wanted to thank him but wanted to do better than just taking him to dinner. Dinner didn't even come close to matching what he did for me.
This guy is in his mid thirties and is a service disabled veteran. He has time in as a Navy seal and an Army ranger.
In March 2019 I bought him a Colt 1911 rail gun. It's not a top level pistol but has nice Novak sights and the trigger felt crisp to me. The fit of the slide is amazing. Close to zero clearance but no bind. Slick feeling. It was perfect.
But it came in a plain jane plastic case.
I knew I could do better. Needed to do better.
A plan hatched to create a high level wooden box for this gun. I enlisted ZILBERT's help as I don't have much knowledge of woodworking and he sure does.
Ryan sent me a Walnut lid and block that was to become the box. I got busy in Solidworks and designed this thing and set to machining it.
Here is the process and end result. My buddy was floored when we delivered it last Saturday.

A test fit to make sure the pocket shape actually fit the pistol. I only get one chance to get it right.

A slight adjustment was made and machining got underway.

These letters. My God so much time into them. My original plan for them did not work so I had to remake them from one solid block. I was down to a .01" diameter cutter on this.
I wanted some contrast so the lettering was easy to read. The internet said you can oxidize brass at home using vinegar and salt. So I sealed this up in Tupperware with salt and vinegar for two weeks.
Washed it with water and a quick toothbrush scrub got it cleaned up. Last was back to the mill where I skimmed a bit of the top to expose some shine...

And the finished product. Ryan did an amazing job finishing and staining this. Twice actually. It sat in my office long enough for mice to chew up one edge of the box. Back to Ryan it went and he made it so you can hardly even tell anything happened at all!
