Beautiful product of cooperation.

Thanks guys! This was one of those projects that meant something so I had to go all-in.

And the finished product. Ryan did an amazing job finishing and staining this. Twice actually. It sat in my office long enough for mice to chew up one edge of the box. Back to Ryan it went and he made it so you can hardly even tell anything happened at all!

Thanks, Kev, for including me in this project. It was an honor to be a part of it even if you did insist on paying me.
My only wish is that I had done a better job with the felt. But it was a learning experience.
The finish is a couple of coats of hand rubbed teak oil followed by several coats of beeswax wood conditioner from a local beekeeper.
This is the first part of the history and care guide I included with the box when I sent it back to Kevin.
Quote
The black walnut wood used in the construction of this custom display case was harvested in 1947 from the cherry and walnut orchard of Donald Benbow Sr. on the hills overlooking the Iowa River Valley northwest of Marshalltown, Iowa.
The lumber was milled from the logs harvested from the trees and then put up in Mr. Benbow’s barn to naturally dry and season. There it remained until Mr. Benbow passed away in the late 1980s. Don Benbow Jr. inherited his father’s farm and moved the lumber from the barn to his garage in town. The lumber remaining was enough to fill 2 bays of his 3 car garage from floor to ceiling.
Over the years, many family heirloom projects have been created using this lumber. In the fall of 2017, Tim Benbow, Don Jr’s adopted son, and one of my best friends contacted me to let me know that his mother and father were going to sell their house and move into a retirement village to focus more on travelling to visit their children and grandchildren throughout the United States.
Tim offered to split the remaining cherry and walnut lumber with me with the promise that I only used it for special projects that had special meaning. When Kevin contacted me about this display case project, I couldn’t think of a better project that would not only be a meaningful use of some of the lumber, but would also honor what Don Sr. wanted when he harvested this lumber and put it up for future use.
I am not only proud of the combined efforts of Kevin and myself, but I am also proud to be part of such a fantastic and noble endeavor to honor one of our Nation’s great heroes, a veteran who was willing to sacrifice himself for the freedoms and liberties that we enjoy today.
Thank you for everything you have done and I hope this small token of our esteem shows just how much your sacrifice means to us.
