Solo seat

So apparently the carbon solo-seat is still available. However most likely not for long. I was quoted close to $900. What did they originally go for. The people who have them, do you like it / is it worth it. I do like the look, but $900 is big money for a seat. I think I could fab something similar for 1/5 the cost.

Not sure I want to give out that info until I've made my decision.

I have often thought of using a small plastic tank, then making a monocoque incorporating a dummy tank and seat combined. I just don't know how I would go about installing the tank underneath the dummy. I know that there's a good portion of the front of the tank that is not really there (to accommodate the airbox). Maybe it would compromise some fuel capacity; but my longest trip is about 30 miles.
Thoughts?

Not sure what bike you have, but I've see this on a 696. I wanted one bad until I saw it in person. It still looked great, but the way the carbon piece attaches to the seat seemed cheesy to me. It only had 2 mounting points in the front and when I touched the back part of the tail it easily pivoted back. There is no seat under the tail to hold it up, if that makes sense. I would think for almost a $1000 they would put some sort of support bracket to hold it.
I'd just by a carbon rear cowl and make your own.

the old school one requires removal of the stock sidepanels (though they did sell carbon ones that worked with the solo carbon seat/tail).
Its supposed to be considerably lighter than the stock seat.
There's a local here in DFW that has one that I was considering buying for a more attractive price, but never pulled the trigger.

Anyone have a picture of this mono seat? I've seen it before, but I've forgotten if I liked it or not.

waste of good money, lightweight or not(although I have to question just how much weight it saves)
$1k will buy a host of other things that actually enhance performance

My main reason for interest is that my bike is turning into a solo-ride. Clearly the stock, or all other aftermarket seats are designed for 2-up and the cowl is really just a cover up. I would like to get the look of a mono. However, I am still torn because of the baggage factor. I curently ride with a back pack, and it is a real PITA. So ideally I would like to have a tail bag. The tank bags get in the way at refueling. I think my best option is to try and fab up a 1098/1198 mono to look as thought it is factory.

One of the girls on the UKMOC forum bought an old style carbon solo seat off ebay afew days ago for $200 delivered an absolute bargain but the sting in the tail is the price of the carbon side panels that go with it $300 from a dealer who still has a pair in stock...

solos style bikes are a cheap conversion. Unbolt the passenger footrests. There .....you have a one person motorbike in about 3 minutes with zero $ spent.

Having become a single lad myself as of late, that was my path! Cycle Cat rear sets and a custom made aluminum cafe style solo cover...

the old school one is significantly lighter and is designed for the go-fast track oriented machine. i was close to grabbing the one that's here locally on the cheap, until i remembered some other things higher on my priority list and 'cushion' is not really its strong suit, quite apart from my sargent seat.
