in edinburgh, hike along the columnar basalt cliff up to the top of 'arthurs seat' ... spectacular
360 deg. view of the entire area.  you won't see another tourist up there.  sit and think
about the >2000 years of history spread before you.  one of my best memories.

I left that cold damp god forsaken place at the age of sixteen. I went to the promised Land America and have been here on and off ever since. Save you money and go somewhere nice.Somewhere Cheap.
Britain is horribly expensive.
But if you are going and you are going to be in London, let me know. I was born and raised there and know some places that you might like.
When are you going? That question is asked because the sun only shines on the 3rd of August for a brief moment...usually between 7am and 702.am
make sure you take plenty of toothpaste and floss. Once the English find out what it is and what its for you'll make a bloody fortune.
hahahahahahahahaha
All joking apart its a great place. If you are going at the end May beginning of June IOMTT. It'll blow you away. I went in 2007 for the centenary. 10 of us from Portland OR went, we had a blast and I took nearly 700 pictures in a week. It was amazing.
What do you guys want to see that is the question? If you want to see Romantic England with all the quaint cottages and villages that is easy to do. If you want to see the reality of an economy that only works in the south of England go to Newcastle..................closed shipyards, closed coal mines, fewer cars
violence, drugs gangs .Yes it happens there too as I am sure you are aware.
If you or your wife like gardens I can give you a list of brilliant gardens to see or Stately Homes /Castles. Some of the world's most amazing gardens are in England ,its the stuff of magazines and fantasy etc.
Fish and chips should only ever be bought and eaten in one place. The local chippy from when I grew up is still in business. When I went back in 2007 I walked in after being gone 25 years and it was like a family reunion. When my brother walked in a minute later ( he was parking the car) it was mayhem! We were welcomed home ,even though he lives only 40 miles away and we had a great time. The owners watched us grow up and not having their own kids all the neighborhood kids became their kids. I have their address if you want it.
Its a rich Isle with a rich history. Decide what you want to see and do and then do research. I can help you if you have an idea of what you like . My mother grew up in an 800 year old house.............yes people still live in them and they are not just for the wealthy. Making a plan if you are on a limited time stay is probably the best thing to do to see certain things otherwise your time will just be spent trundling around and not seeing what a great little cold wet place has to offer.
If you go to London the beer to drink is Fullers London Pride. Fullers brewery is great and their beer a fixture in society. Be prepared to spend a LOT of money. Everything is EXPENSIVE.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the War Room.

I'm so jealous!  My ex and I had friends there (well, they are her friends and are still there...) and we visited them 5 times in 7 years.  Little village south of Guilford.  We were there in December a few times, September a couple, and she was there on her own with them a couple of summers.  My favorite of our trips was when we rented a flat in London for a couple weeks over Xmas and NEw Years (two blocks from the SOuth Kensignton tube station)...I love that city!  From the postings here, you have a lot of great suggestions so I dont need to give my two shillings worth.  You will have such a great time.

Silverstone...for the F1GP or MotoGP?

We just got tickets for sundays race..... odds are we'll arrive in london a few days before and leave a few days after. We haven't booked flights yet, so arrival dates are still up in the air.

Did you ever answer the first question?

What month...year?

Inquiring minds want to know. ;D

OK Bob heres an idea... fly over to manchester (cheaper) 10 days before the sunday of the motogp, hire a car, drive to my home and I'll take you to the Isle of Man ferry terminal at Liverpool (8miles) go over on the Seecat as foot pasengers (cheaper than taking the car) and watch the 1st race on saturday the 4th june, come back on monday (you've got to see mad sunday) and I'll pick you up with your hirecar. You could then drive north to the lakes, north yorkshire moors or scotland for afew days making sure you get down to silverstone for the following weekend after which you could then go south for the cotswolds or london to finish off your vacation. Being a northerner I don't know much about london but I know that in 2002 we had friends over from atlanta and did the tour that I've suggested and they loved it (couldn't believe that guys raced on the streets) and even managed chips and fish in a beautiful market town in the lakes that has what I think is special, A car park that at weekends is reserved for motor cycles only and boy it sure pisses off car drivers (I love it).
Only an idea so don't shoot the messenger...cheers...Geoff.
