Author Topic: Upper triple clamp old to new style question  (Read 2317 times)

I recently upgraded from an older 99 750 monster to a newer 07 S2R1000. ON my old bike, i had a Cycle Cat upper triple clamp that i'm just in love with. There's obviously different part numbers for a reason, but does anyone know if its just the bore of the steer tube and pretension head bolt or is there an issue of placement/orientation of the fork tubes in relation to the steer tube.

roundabout question, if its just a question of the bore of the steer tube, can I just take it to my machinist buddy and have it bored out?

Thanks lads!

When CC was getting rid of their last remaining stock, I called Chris at CC to ask him this very same question, to see if it could be bored out to fit the newer larger diameter steering tube nut.  The quick answer is no, because when doing so the new bore would break through into the hole for the pinch bolt.

negative.

the old style 94-01 frame uses the skinny stem, a la SS and 851/888. Also, tapered steering head bearings from the factory. So different stem size, different headstock size too.

the old style uses a cap and a spanner-style nut to tighten the bearings/lower triple to the frame (there's yer rigidity elements). The top triple has a pinch bolt to the steering stem that fastens it at that point, and there's the somewhat-redundant top nut&washer.

Compare with new style (and see why I said redundant): Steering stem nut protrudes through top triple - you tighten pinch bolt for top triple to the 'nut' itself (its really more like a cap). Also makes checking torque on the steering head bearings much faster. New style stems come equipped from factory with regular ball bearings for the headstock.  SpeedyMoto makes 'skeletenized' triples for your bike if you like the holes. You can also change the stem nut to a billet one from Ducati Performance or Slingshot Racing for a splash of color.

AFAIK, there's a difference in offset as well.

Oh yes - i forgot to mention that:

25mm on the old style 94-01 851/888 based frames
30mm on the new style 02+ ST based frames

Honestly, I think CycleCat should start up again and just do triples. I am a tool maker, and I have given it much thought to starting my own little side business doing just that . Triples for Ducatis. That way there would only be a couple of different styles and I would not need to make big money, just enough for supplemental income.

a lot goes into a good one, design-wise.  not a lot goes into the run of the mill design, loosely based on a simple triangle with some round holes cut into it.

My shop has some pretty awesome capabilities and our design dept has impressive 3D software. I'm fairly confident that I could machine something similar to the CC's or even the AEM's from Bellisimoto. My biggest issue will be to get all of the offset's correct and get the machine time. Just not sure if I want to re-invent the wheel.

Offsets/Dims:
25mm for old Monsters - small dia. stem, thickness of top triple does matter, as top bolt must reach stem's internal threads (accounting for washer). 30mm for new Monsters, large dia stem hole, thickness of triple matters less, 36mm for SBK (and every generation uses a slightly different damper mount location).

50mm fork holes for OEM Monster forks, 53mm for SBK forks. 205mm fork spacing.

Don't forget considerations for orientation of pinch bolts with respect to using clipons with risers or not, metric bolt threading, gauge mount holes, and "auxiliary" holes along bottom of front for those who are track enthusiasts and like to mount reservoirs "in" rather than on the bars.
