I have 2 on my 3 bikes.
I actually tried just the left mirror on my old S4Rs one day and really felt very " naked " out there , so I'm happy w. 2.
I head check if in traffic, but usually where I ride I don't have any traffic to worry with other than what I pass .
I do headcheck on my left as a habit.

Use two. Probably don't need both, but it balances me mentally.

Left is for the left fast lane... highspeed passers and the blind spot.
Right is for directly behind... after passing to move back into the lane and at stop lights/around town/etc
Same here, except with inverted left/right cuz we ride/drive on the left lane of the road.

This thread has turned out to be very interesting and revealing.
I've been riding for many years, but you folks have introduced some compelling perspectives, strategies.
Now I'm considering adding a second mirror!
I'm glad I asked...but with two bar end mirrors, I don't think my bike will fit through the front door... I keep my bike in the living-room.
I'm glad I asked!

I have some DP mirrors and always use both regularly. I like to keep a good eye on my 6.

I run one 2" CRG on the left side of my Monster. It doesn't do much, but its nice to know when someone is behind you. I have the two stock honker mirrors on my 999, they don't do much, except let me admire my elbows. I usually just turn and look.

I used no mirrors for a long time... then put on one Rizoma reverse retro bar end. So much nicer having a mirror on the left side again.
When it came time to start riding on base, I had to have two mirrors (so sayeth the boss man), and bought a set of fleabay knockoffs for the rizoma prototype... now I run one real Rizoma, and one knockoff, and I love having two mirrors!

I run one leftside fleabay knockoff.
And hate it... considering upgrading as my mirror keeps moving at speed no matter how tight.
If you are only going to run one side, you might as well make it a nice mirror.

Of our two Monsters, 1 has both stock mirrors, the other has 1 left side bar-end mirror. I really like having the 1 and feel that I check often and am safe in that regard. The dual mirrors seems about just as effective.
On a side note, I had my bike in the shop recently and took of the bar-end mirror so that it wouldn't be in the way, and when I rode it home without any mirror, I felt like I was totally blind to what was happening behind me.
Definitly need 1, don't really need 2.

On a side note, I got my bar-end mirror from REI....$15 I think - works fine, is easy to adjust, and takes the vibration out of the end of the bar.

My knockoff isn't that bad, but it is MUCH looser than the real deal... also some of the "stainless" parts of it have rusted over completely... rizoma has not.

With the one, I can see the breath of what's behind me across the lane, but I always head check regardless just to be sure.

Seems you'd have a blindspot on the non-miror side near the rear of your bike though. Sure, you can do a head-check. I am contantly glancing at both mirrors though just so I know what's around me.
Everyone has their own methods.

You're absolutly right - there is one towards the far right but the head check takes care of that! I just gotten used to it, and hardly notice it. Plus for me, doing a head check makes me feel more engaged.

i'm always a bit paranoid about knowing what's around me too... for me, i constantly scan the mirrors at lights because i've seen way too many videos and articles about people getting slammed into by trucks at lights recently.
