Clutch Options

So, while the bike is in pieces, I am contemplateing what to do about the clutch. I really do not ride hard enough to warrant a slipper, although it would be sweet. And with the case machined, I need some bling. An STM basket is going to run me $280. Pressure plate another $150, springs caps and bearing $60. My stock plates have 10k so in theory, they are ok for another 5k. I could bling out the hub for another $200. For a total of $690. With the plates in need of replacement before the end of summer. another $250. Grand total of $950+. Does it make more sense to just bite the bullet and get a full setup for $1150 from Motowheels. I think I'm pretty set on the STM basket. Maybe Motowheels can swap the STM basket for the Surflex one. What would you do?

Baskets are wear and tear items, so replace it when it is on its way out along with ur clutch pack  so you can get a nice even wear.

No one sees the clutch drum so who cares.

Pressure plate + clutch cover + SS spring and caps = where its at!

make the beast with two backs that!   for less than that you can get a full slipper clutch - basket AND plates included!

if you are replacing the clutch basket, my preference has been with the 'ringed' style aluminum baskets - like the old VeeTwo (no longer available), the Nichols, NGR, etc - a ring that keeps the baskets 'fingers' from spreading at higher rpm.

And I try to remember always, friction plates and the clutch basket 'go together' - in that they wear on each other. So I do aluminum with aluminum - on a non-slipper it would be like a nichols basket and a barnett clutch pack. 

I read that the barnett dry clutch plate packs are not good for slippers, so if you want to avoid in the future - you'll want something else.

if you had some extra jingle-jangle, look into the EVR / STM (and i think others) that have 48T baskets and corresponding 48T clutch packs.

I have the vee-two clutch with the finger band that you bolt up to it. i also have the barnett one with steel sheet wraped around the fingers.

Stock OEM plates are aluminum and barnett ones are also aluminum. so if you use a steel basket your clutch pack will wear very quickly. if you use aluminum on aluminum, depending on how you ride, where you ride, you can use as little as 2 clutch packs per basket or sometiems people use 1 pack for over 30,000 miles, just depends on your riding style.

Do know that a slipper will wear much much faster.

i do not liek barnett clutch packs. Ive had a bad experience wih them up here in the northeast.  i gave them to El Matador and he runs it down in Texas where its dry and has no problems with it.

not only that, but less wear on the pack/basket where they contact - lets the friction material wear be the only factor worth noting.

the vee-two one i have is like yours - the only different between it and the nichols is that the nichols only uses 4 tiny screws to secure that ring to the top, whereas my VeeTwo has a crap ton. I believe 12.

Hmm. They work great for me down here too. Wonder what gives where you are - i've heard other complaints too, but have never experienced a problem myself.

We've seen several completely smoked packs with low miles on them in the shop lately. Don't think it was the riders either!

These were all new packs... like less than 2 months of riding on them!

indeed.   like you, when "gettin was good" - i bought the tool, hub and basket at the same time. then went overboard and bought other doodads, like cams, etc. ho hum.

I do have a Vee Two basket and drum (from when our dollar was the pacific peso), but I run Barnett plates.

Nowdays I buy American parts! :D

I'd like to get a barnett clutch basket, the gold anodized ally ones with the stainless inserts..
anyone tried these? what are they like?
